Setting

SettingThe time and location in which a story takes place is called the setting.  For some stories the setting is very important, while for others it is not.

SettingThere are several aspects of a story's setting to consider when examining how setting contributes to a story (some, or all, may be present in a story)-

Setting

a)  Place - geographical location. Where is the action of the story taking place?

Settingb)  Time - When is the story taking place? (historical period, time of day, year, etc)

Setting

c)  Weather Conditions - Is it rainy, sunny, stormy, etc?

Settingd)  Mood or Atmosphere - What feeling is created at the beginning of the story?  Is it bright and cheerful or dark and frightening?

from “A Very Short Story”

by Ernest HemingwayOne hot evening in Padua they carried him up onto the roof and he could look out over the top of the town. After a while it got dark and the searchlights came out.

from “A Very Short Story”

by Ernest Hemingway The others went down and took the bottles with them. He and Luz could hear them below on the balcony. Luz sat on the bed. She was cool and fresh in the hot night.
