ENGL 111 IRW QUIZ 3B
Read the essay and answer the questions that follow: (15 points in total)
Deadly Ware (12 Points)
1“It’s better to be acceptable than unacceptable.” This statement is valid for
all human situations. So, would one rather be socially unacceptable or acceptable?
Exercising and keeping fit draws people to one; whereas smoking pushes people way
from one. Smoking kills more people than the combined mortality rates from road
accidents, homicide and AIDS. According to the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC), smoking “harms nearly every organ of the body”, as well as creates
diseases that make the smoker generally unhealthy. It is therefore a “no brainer” to
avoid any activity to do with tobacco or cigarettes. Even as tobacco companies
glamorize smoking cigarettes by associating it with sophistication and being “cool”,
smoking should be avoided at all costs. It is a sleek way of peddling death to the
unaware. Thus, unlike exercising; smoking is fatal, expensive, and socially degrading.
2In the first place, smoking’s high fatality rate makes it very dangerous for
human consumption. Smokers die most because of the toxicity of cigarettes.
3In the second place, the cost of packs of cigarettes is expensive, therefore
it’s economically unwise to smoke.
4___________________________________________________________.
This powerful, unnatural smell, which is the outcome of smoking, makes people keep
away from smokers. This is socially degrading because the odor coming from the
smoker makes people keep their distance from him or her.
5The disadvantages of smoking far outweigh the advantages; hence it’s in the
smokers’ best interest to quit. While some may see smoking as a social-bonding
pursuit, it’s a very destructive way of life. If the fatality rate, cost of smoking and
social degradation aren’t deterrents, I don’t know what would be.
