Engineers, what is wrong here?

Help me!

No pushing!

There are penguins all over the southern hemisphere of the Earth , not just in

Antarctica.

The red dots indicate where penguins live.

Boulders Beach is on the coast of South Africa.

The Boulders Beach penguins live here. As the climate across the globe changes, these penguins are getting hot. To keep from overheating, they cool off in the water.

Boulders Beach PenguinsThis isn’t helping the penguins! While they are cooling off, the sea gullssteal their eggs.

So, the park rangers have built little houses to protect their eggs.

This is helping them stay cool, protecttheir eggs, and survive!

But how can we help?

For starters, we can conserve energy so we don’t use as many fossil fuels in power plants for heating and cooling!

What can we do at home to help the penguins?

How can we conserve energy at home?

What do you think the arrows represent?

Where is the heat going?

What time of year do you think this is?

What about in the summer?

Now where is the heat going?

In the summer, it’s HOT! Heat transfers into our houses!

So, what do these words mean?

We need to slow down heat transfer.

Keep heat out in the summer…Keep heat inside in the winter…

Use less energy to heat and cool our homes.

In other words, we need to stop the

from happening. So…

Existing materials are modified or new materials are invented, like Aerogels,

One ounce has the surface area of 10 football fields

It is the lightest existing solid material It is an excellent thermal insulator

because it is mostly trapped air Essentially made of sand

Radiant Barriers,• Can be applied anywhere in attic

space of house• Keeps heat out in summer, warmth

in during winter• Usually made of aluminum

Ultra Touch Jeans Insulation,

Wouldn’t it be nice to turn these jeans into this:

Then use it to insulate, like this!

Smart Windows,

Windows cut the glare when the sun is too intense. These items could reduce 98% of solar radiation from entering home through windows!

Fiberglass Windows,

Solar Screens,

and Solar Panel Roofing Tiles.

• Transform the sun’s energy into useable electricity to power your home!

• Rebates for using?

Conserving energy can be one of the ways to help…

creating a new and improved habitat that will keep them cool and protect their eggs.

New habitats mean a new design. What will the new design This is the old design. look like?

Points to Ponder…

Penguin habitat building materials may be purchased from your local Igloo Depot. Materials are:

Cotton ball Price $10Wooden/popsicle stick Price $20 Aluminum foil Price $5Foam sheets Price $40Construction paper Price $5Felt fabric Price $40Bubble wrap Price $10Mylar sheet Price $5
