OIL VERSUS DRY
Why Dry?Pros: No leaks No swelling of dielectric due to oil permeation Heat dissipation is as good with gel fill while highly filled urethanes and epoxies
have very even better thermal conductivity characteristics. Longer life – typically rated 100K hours nominally.
Cons: Not compatible with mechanical interrupt, rely on segmented film for protection.
Why Oil?Pros: Helps with corona onset reduction in AC applications
Reduces overall size of component. (660-700VAC/section oil, 400VAC max/section dry)
Helps with cooling by offering good thermal conductivity. Compatible with mechanical interrupt
Cons: Oil can cause PP to swell and crack metallization resulting in shorter life Potential leak Potentially shorter life due to higher temperature applications (60k Hours) Potential flammable fluid.
