What the ALL will be used for: CDIO

• Up to 250 students at a time, usually in teams of 4 or 5

• Conceptual design (sketching, brainstorming)

• Detailed design (CAD, calculation)• Implementation (models,

prototypes, machining, finishing, decorating)

• Operation (testing, use, competition)

What the ALL will be used for: other activity

• Summer schools (e.g. A Level, UCAS applicants)

• Formula student car(s)• “Two week aeroplane” • Training in use of tools and machines• Project work – final year or two years;

individual, pairs or teams• MSc projects – lasting 5 months

including the summer

Other issues

• There are five years of students at any time (3 year BEng, 4 year MEng plus 1 year MSc)

• Total student population is about 900, every one of whom will use the lab in some way.

• Safety is very important – some machines can only be used under supervision

• Students will work with wood, metal, foam, plastics, paints and electronic components

• There will be a separate CSD computing suite elsewhere in the buildings

• Wireless networking will be entirely feasible

• To inspire our students to be creative, rigorous, imaginative and hard-working

• To inspire staff to want to work in a stimulating environment
