Energy Sources

Radiant

• Radiant energy is energy that is carried by light.

• Examples: light, x-rays, gamma rays, radio waves, and visible light

Thermal (heat) energy

• Energy that is formed by the movement and vibration of atoms. Thermal energy increases as an object’s temperature increases.

Sound

• Energy that is produced by sound vibrations as vibrations travel through different material.

Kinetic energy

• Energy of movement. For example, running water or a person walking down the hall.

Mechanical energy

• Energy from the force of moving parts.• Examples: bending your arm to carry

something or a crane moving an object.

Electrical energy

• Energy formed by the movement of electrons and usually travels through a wire.

• Example: Lightning

Gravitational Potential energy

• Potential energy that an object has at an elevated position.

• Example: a rock at the top of a hill, a ball at the top of its bounce.

Chemical energy

• Energy that is stored in chemical bonds.• Examples: a battery, burning wood,

Nuclear energy

• Energy that is made from the splitting of atoms.

• Example: Light from the Sun
