• Napoleon created a huge empire between 1804-1812

• Napoleon’s invasions made people aware of their loyalty to their own nation – they did not want the French to rule them

3. Invades Russia in 1812Went horribly – Napoleon invaded with over 500,000 troops and only 10,000 survivedCaused his empire to start to fall apart

• With his army weakened, his enemies attack and defeat Napoleon

• He is captured and exiled to Elba in April 1814

• France will then have a Constitutional Monarchy

• They will be ruled by King Louis XVIII, the brother of King Louis XVI

C. 100 Days

• Napoleon will try to make a comeback in the summer of 1815

• He will rule for 100 days, but is again defeated by the British at the Battle of Waterloo

D. Exile and Death

• Napoleon was exiled to St. Helena after his 100 Days

• He would remain there until his death on May 5, 1821

• King Louis XVIII will rule again

E. Congress of Vienna

• A meeting in Vienna to create peace and stability in Europe after Napoleon’s defeat.

• Five “great powers” met

• Russia, Prussia, England, France, & Austria

Goals of the Congress of Vienna:

• To surround France with strong nations

• To create a balance of power

• Establish legitimacy – restoring monarchs to their thrones

Results of the Meeting:

• No war between Europeans for 40 years

• Conservatives gain power but Democratic ideals continued to spread and led to additional revolutions in 1830 and 1848

• France was a constitutional monarchy but became weaker while Britain and Prussia were stronger
