EMMA KNAPP
TECHNICALPORTFOLIO
Theatre is my Romeo to Juliet, my pen to a writer, the world is my stage. I have always
had a passion for the arts. I discovered theatre during the end of seventh grade. It was not until
high school though that my love of theatre became a real passion. Theatre quickly became a part
of me and what I wish to pursue as a career.
I have grown up in a family who has a great appreciation for the arts whether it is theatre,
music, photography, or movies. My cousin is an opera singer, my grandmother was an art
teacher and adores going to the theatre as well as taking me to see shows, and my parents both
studied technical theatre when they were younger. Participating in theatre in middle school was a
great kick starter to my high school theatre experience. It gave me a good hobby to do after
school and I made new friends.
I started cultivating my love for theatre into a passion for theatre when I got to high
school. It quickly became an extension of me. I switched between each section of technical
production before finding my specialty. I found that sound production was something that
sparked an interest in me. It was something that kept drawing my attention like a moth to a flame
and I quickly came to learn what the upper classmen had to teach. I learned how to run a sound
board, put mics on people, and learned to fix problems where ever I could. When they left I
quickly took over the sound department and did whatever I could to learn more about sound
design and production. I got a job at my school as a Student Technician where I had to learn
lighting as well, which quickly became something that I loved. I got to learn how to light the
stage whether it is in specific areas or the whole stage, as well as some basic programing of the
lighting board.
Theatre is something I want to do as a career because it would be something that I love to
do, and every day would be exciting and challenging. I strive to learn whatever I can in any part
of the production such as Set, Costume, Make-Up, but my biggest focus is Sound and Lighting. I
would like to get a degree in Sound Design and get a career mixing sound. I love the way when I
am listening to a show or musical the voices and music just surround me and envelop me, pulling
me into the world of the show.

Sound Design Statement
The Director wanted to keep this performance of Annie in its original form, as a comic
strip showcasing the circumstances of the economic and social life in America during the 1920s
and 1930s. Annie is about a little girl who had an abundance of hope and spirit and through her
many endeavors, she brings her unwavering hope and sunny disposition not only to the
characters around her, but the audience as well. I was the Sound Director for this show. The
Director wanted everyone with a line to have a mic. The biggest trial was getting everyone a mic
with the small resources we had. At the time we had 42 people with lines throughout the show
and only 14 mics to work with. I borrowed 11 mics from a local middle school. That gave me 25
mics for 42 people. I went through the script and through every character's lines, when they
entered, and when they exited, finding convenient times to switch mics between characters and
this got everyone who had a line a mic. I bought 2 ribbon mics and made them look time period
appropriate for the radio scene. By making the mics look of the period and having every person
get a mic we were able to make the directors vision become a reality.
