Current Forest Condition
FOREST INVENTORY
• Total forested areas (private and public) in Barrie = 1,595 hectares (19.6% of total land area)
– Woodlots in City Ownership = 601 hectares (38% of total forested area)
– 145 km of city owned forest bordering with private lands

URBAN TREE INVENTORY
• Approximately 140,000 individual trees (private and public) in Barrie (mapped in GIS database)
• Includes:
– 15,000 Open Space Park Trees and
– 34,000 Street Trees

2007: Barrie implements a moratorium on planting Ash trees on public lands and recommends that Fraxinus be omitted from all private landscaping plans (e.g. site plan development)

March 26, 2012: Council adopts the Emerald Ash Borer Program
Projected 15-Year, Two Phase EAB Program:
Phase 1: 2012 to EAB discovery in Barrie
a) Identify specimen ash trees for treatment
b) Begin systematic removal and replacement of young ash trees on boulevards
c) Proactive planting in areas of high ash component
d) Public education on EAB

Phase 2: Post Discovery of EAB
e) Begin bi-annual treatment of specimen ash
f) Systematic removals to include mature ash where integration with other programs create efficiencies (e.g. block pruning program)
g) Removal of all ash trees on a street or within a park where EAB has been discovered.
