Line:

A moving dot.

Lines can be thin, bold, straight, geometric, organic……

Geometric/straight

Organic

Lines are almost everywhere we look. Lines can add structure and dynamics to your photos.

Color:

The product of light reflecting off of a surface.

Color can affect the “mood” of a photo.

For example: Warm colors (red, yellow, and orange) can add warm and cheer to a photo.

Cool colors (blue, green and purple) can make a photo seem sad, cold, or

lonely.

Texture: The tactile and visual qualities of a surface.

Texture can be implied

(visual), as in photographs.

You can’t actually

touch the texture, but you can see

it.

Or the texture can be tactile. For example,

wood, bark on trees, and furry animals have a

texture that can be felt.

Space: Depth or the

illusion of depth.

Space is creating by converging lines, overlapping objects, and decreasing size as the

object gets further away.

The camera angle or point of view can make the

space more successful.

Shape:

2-dimensional area enclosed by

line.

Shape can be geometric or organic.

Organic

Geometric

You also have

negative and

positive shape.

Value:

The lights and darks of a composition.

Value is easiest to see in black and

white or monochromatic

(one color) photos.

The higher the contrast between the values, the better the

photo.

Form:

3-dimensional object that have

volume or occupies space.

Anything that isn’t flat has form.

Generally, anything that has form also has value.

Your Assignment: • Take AT LEAST 2 photographs for each element

(14 in total).• Edit ALL 14 Photographs using Adobe

Photoshop.• Create a power point illustrating 2

photographs for each element, including a title slide (at least 15 slides).

• The 14 photographs is one grade.• The power point presentation is another

grade.

Power Point Presentation Requirements:

• 1 title slide with your name and the name of the project.

• 14 slides with 1 photo on each slide.• Element labels on each slide.• Transitions and animation.• Background designs.

Hints and tips:

• Remember the compositional tips from Chapter 3.

• Fill the frame.• Try different angles.• Remember the rule of thirds.• Try creative editing. Remember this is a digital

photography class. Creative editing is what helps your grade.
