Elements, Compounds and Mixtures

Date:

Substances

An element is a substance that cannot be decomposed by any chemical reaction into simpler substances. All known elements listed on PT.

A compound is a substance composed of two or more elements chemically combined. Ex NaCl

Mixtures

A mixture is a material that can be separated by physical means into two or more substances. The substances are simply mixed together – no reaction. Ex. Iron + sulfur.

A homogeneous mixture is a mixture that is uniform in its properties throughout. (milk, lemonade, tap water)

A heterogeneous mixture is a mixture that consists of physically distinct parts, each with different properties. (granite, sulfur mixed with iron)
