THE  2015  FERRY  SAFETY  AND  TECHNOLOGY  CONFERENCE

…  or  ….  eLearning:  coming  soon  to  a

vessel  near  you!  Marine Learning Systems

eLearning  Growth

Stunning  Growth  –          first    H.E.,  now  Corp.

But  mari9me  industry  behind  in  many  ways:     Tradi9onal?     Difficult  context     Wide  variety  of  skills  &  equip

What  is  eLearning? eLearning  101  -‐  Two  main  components:

1.  Content  (courses  &  assessments)  2.  Management  (LMS)

What  is  an  LMS?   LMS:  central  hub  for  delivery  &  mgmt.  of  training  &  assessment    LMS  is  24x7,  career-‐long,  central  training  resource    Hub  for  all  training  ac9vi9es  (learning,  assessment,

mentorship,  skill  enhance.,  career  prog.,  admin.,  etc)

...  for  trainees,    trainers,  and    admin!  ...

LMS  is  Central  Hub: For  Trainees:   For  courses,  tests,  learning  plans,  support

LMS  is  Central  Hub: For  Trainers  &  Supervisors:   To  assess,  guide  &  support  trainees

LMS  is  Central  Hub For  Admin:  Metrics

Content  usage    Performance  trends:  org.  and  individual

Iden9fy  issues  before  perf.  affected,  or  accident!

  Kaizen!

…  But  –  Does  it  work?...

Can  Significantly  Improve  Outcomes Main  Strength:  improves  outcome  /  experience    My  research  @  UBC:  Randomized  &  controlled

◦ Web-‐based  students  equal  to  lecture-‐based  ◦  Combined  students  significantly  outperformed

2010  DOE  Meta-‐Analysis:  ◦  “Students  in  online  condi.ons  performed  modestly  be5er,  on  average,  than  those  learning    the  same  material  through  tradi.onal  face-‐to-‐face  instruc.on”

◦  “Instruc.on  combining  online  and  face-‐to-‐face  elements  had  a  larger  advantage  rela.ve  to  purely  face-‐to-‐face  instruc.on  than  did  purely  online  instruc.on”

…  but  maybe  the    mariKme  industry  is    different?  …

BC  Ferries  Blended  Learning

Problem:  wanted  more  standardized  &  objec9ve  job  &  familiariza9on  training  and  assessment

Moved  to  three-‐phase  blended  learning  approach:

BC  Ferries  Blended  Learning BC  Ferries  deployed  blended  learning  as  part  of  SailSafe  ini9a9ve:    Injuries:  360  -‐>150    Serious  injuries:  100  -‐>  40    Days  lost:  12,000  -‐>  7,500    Insur.  claims:  $3.5M  -‐>  $0.8M    On-‐9me  ferry  performance

increased  from  85%  to  92%

10

So  ... eLearning  is  here.  We  need  to  understand  it  in  order  to  make  informed  decisions:   Understand  the  basics  of  eLearning   Understand  the  LMS  –  primary  tool   Understand  that  it  DOES  work  in  general   Most  importantly:

◦ Understand  it  DOES  work  in  our  industry!

Above  all:  ask  ques9ons,  learn  &  experiment!

Thank  You!
