The“Small Giants”isanewnetworkofveryproactivesmalltomedium-sizedcities.Whiletheyareoftenasizethatisnotinstinctivelyassociatedwiththetermsmartcitytheyarepunchingabovetheirweightbecauseoftheirabilitytobecomesmarterandwill-forinstance-developjointdemonstrationprojects,fosterlarge-scaledeploymentofsmartsolutions,ensurecriticalmass,createlong-termcooperationandaddtoknowledge-sharingandresultsdissemination.

We are focussing on1. large-scaleroll-outofelectro-mobilityandintegratedinfrastructures,2. inter-modalityandpublictransportinnovation,3. solutionsinthefieldofnewmobilityservicesandintelligenttransport
solutions.
Around400partnerscooperatethroughapproximately70commitments.Firstdeliverablesincludetheanalysisof:• cityneedsandopportunitiesforbetterpublic-privatecollaboration,• barriersandneeds,• developmentoftargetedplatformsforprojectdevelopmentand
partnering.Thisishelpingtobetterunderstandandlinkbothdemandandsupply.

TheEV4SCCcommitmentisevolvingfastandnowwith45partnersisattheheartofeffortstobuildacollaborativeplatformforrolling outelectro-mobilityandintegratedinfrastructuresonlargerscale.
Therearemanygoodideasinthefieldofnewmobilityservicesandintelligenttransportsolutions.Atadedicatedeventon22May2015,early-stage investors (accelerators)willbelinkedtocitiestokick-startdiscussionaboutopportunitiesforcollaboration.Thegoal:morestart-upsthatturntheirideasintoasuccessfulmarketoperation.

What’s the value of public infrastructure in your city?Infrastructurehastobeexploitedmoreeffectivelyandinanintegrated,multi-disciplinaryway.Anewand‘digitalfirst’approachisneeded.Ourexistinginfrastructureneedsoptimisationandnewinfrastructurehastobeconceivedformultiplepurposes,whiledecreasingriskforinvestmentsandunforeseeablelong-termcosts.
Currentlytheworkisdoneinthreesubgroups:1)Smartlampposts,2)UrbanPlatformsand3)Cross-CityTransformation(exploitingdataforefficientintegratedcivilworks).

Humble Lamppost:Thereare60-90millionexistinglamppostsaroundEuropeancities–most‘dumb’.30organisationsareworkingtogetherwithaboldgoaltomake10millionofthemsmartby2017.That’snotjustchangingtolowemissionlampsandlightingcontroltosaveupto50%onenergybills;it’smulti-purposingtheassetstodeliverenvironmentalsensing,WiFihotspots,flowdata,trafficmanage-ment,smartparking,ElectricVehiclechargepoints,etc.
Urban Platforms:Wehavegatheredtheviewsofcitiesonurbanplatformstohelpgetcities‘offthefence’,seethevalueandbreakthebarrierstoadoptionofsuchplatforms.Thesecanstreamlineoperationsandhelpdeliverresourceefficiency.Theywillfosterthecreationofcross-sectorialapplicationsandsolutions.Wehavealsokicked-offanIndustry-ledinitiativetodevelopaprinciple-basedopenarchitectureforurbanplatforms.
