Welcome to Sporting Edge, Edge HillUniversity’s sports complex at Ormskirk.Sporting Edge aims to provide a highquality and varied sports and recreationprogramme for the whole Universitycommunity, whether you are a student,member of staff or amember of the localcommunity. Our dedicated and friendlystaff are here to help you get the best outof your visit to Edge Hill whether youare a regular user or are visiting for thefirst time.
This last year has been a busy one. It hasseen an extension to the sports centrewith a new gymnasium and we havewelcomed the Sports Therapy Unit intothe first floor. Last year sawextraRunningClub and Zumba sessions, and theintroduction of Salsacise at lunchtimes;we hope to add Group cycling classes tothe programme soon. In other areas weare developing the website and willintroduce an online payment facility andare improving the way we communicatewith our customers through socialmedia such as Facebook and Twitter.

Sporting Edge is a 25 acre Sports andLeisure complex located to the East of theEdge Hill campus in Ormskirk, offeringsome of the best sporting facilities in theregion and is fully accessible to wheelchairusers and others with disabilities.

From September 2011, Edge HillUniversity’s state of the art ‘Hub’ buildingwill be open for business offering a wideselection of quality food and beverages.
Choose from our exciting three cateringoffers; a quality ‘high street” coffeeshop, a ‘Grab & Go’ sandwich outlet or ahot food severy offering traditionaldishes, vegetarian options, live theatrecooking, salads, soups and desserts.
The Hub will also have a small ‘highstreet’ mini-mart / newsagent store thatwill be open from 8am-8pm.
Student Sport and Recreation
Edge Hill Sport has created a partnershipbetween the University and the Students’Union which delivers student sport andrecreation. This is a new venturewhich aimstocombinethestrengthsandresourcesofbothparties to raise the standard of competitivesport and offer more opportunities forrecreationandsocial sport.Thereareavarietyof sporting activities ranging fromfootball tocheerleading and rugby to darts. There areopportunities for students to compete andrepresent the university as part of ‘TeamEdge Hill’ or, for those just looking forsomething new and fun, why not try therecreation programme called ‘Be Active’.
Team Edge Hill
There are opportunities forstudents to represent EdgeHill University against someof the best universities in the
country in the British Universities andCollege Sports (BUCS) competition. Manyof the clubs have professional coachesemployed to help improve skills at trainingsessions and offer match day support atfixtures. This has proved successful overthe last two seasons and has seen Edge Hillmove up the BUCS rankings to become oneof themost improved universities for sportin the country. A selection of the sportsclubs and individual sports available areshown on the left but there are others.
Be ActiveThere is a recreationalprogramme that offers arange of activities for allstudents during term time.Whether you want to take
part as an individual in exercise classes orrunning clubs, or with others as part of ateam in 5-a-side or netball, there issomething for everyone. New for this yearare ‘Back to Netball’ and ‘No StringsBadminton’. Both of these are open to staffand students who are either new to thesportor justwant toplayNetballorBadmintonfor fun. There will be a qualified leadereach week who will organise the sessionsand offer as much advice as necessary.

We pride ourselves on providing thatpersonal touch to help you get themaximumbenefit from your training. Highly qualified,knowledgeable and friendly fitnessprofessionals, who are all registered withthe Register of Exercise Professionals(REPs) are there to help you.
Our customers range from people who areembarking on an exercise programme forthe first time, topeoplewho trainandcompeteat a high level. All of our customers mixhappily together in a friendly atmosphere.
Sporting Edge is a member of the FitnessIndustry Association (FIA), and complieswith the FIA Code of Practice to ensure asafe and quality facility.

Sports Therapy UnitThe Sports Therapy and injury rehabilitationCentre on the first floor of Sporting Edge isopen to all visitors whether student, staff orcommunity. The team of specialised staffoffer a quality service in a modern, purposebuilt andwell-equipped sports therapy clinic.
Exercise Referral Scheme(Positive Steps)Sporting Edge, in consultation with localGP’s and health professionals, operates a verysuccessful Exercise Referral programme,giving a 10-week course of exercise specificallyaimed at improving a broad range of physical,physiological and psychological medicalconditions.
Patients can be referred by their GP orhealth care professional onto the scheme,where our WRIGHT Foundation QualifiedConsultantswill devise anappropriate exercise10 week schedule with the option of takingout a discounted membership at the end ofthe course.
Regular exercise can be fun as well as helpingtomake you feel better, strengthening joints,reducing the risks of heart disease, reducingthe effects of arthritis and probably makingyou live longer!
Fitness Suite Prices
You can pay for your membership either by monthly Direct Debit or as a one offannual fee. Unlikemany other Fitness Clubs we do not charge you an initial joiningfee and you are not tied in to any long-term contracts. All we ask is that you giveus two months written notice for any Direct Debit cancellations.
You may also choose to pay-as-you go each visit at only £4.00 per session

‘Wheels 4 All’‘Wheels 4 All’ aims to get people back intocycling in a totally safe environment and issuitable for people of all ages, abilities, dis-abilities and differing needs. We offer anumber of sessions each week where arange of cycles are available to suit every-one, even wheelchair users, and trainedmembers of staff are on hand to help.

Fitness Classes
A range of fitness classes with fully qualifiedand experienced instructors are offered bySporting Edge at various times throughoutthe day, most of which take place in theDance Studio of theWilson Centre adjacentto Sporting Edge. These range from themore gentle Yoga, Pilates and Toning classesthrough to the high energy Circuit training,Running Club, Zumba and Boot Camp.
All classes are free to Premier members.Standard & casual members pay a smalladditional fee per class. All class participantsmust obtain a ticket at Reception to gainentry to each class.

Gymnastics & TrampolineGymnastics andTrampoline classes are taughtby qualified staff in a fun and friendlyenvironment. Classes are designed to allowchildren toexperienceandmaster skills,withinthe British Gymnastics award scheme. OurTrampolining classes are designed to allowchildren to experience aerial acrobatics in asafe and enjoyable atmosphere.
Gymnastics and trampolining are aimed atchildren aged 5 to 15 years with a variety ofdifferent experiences and back grounds, withthe benefits of developing co-ordination,strength and flexibility.
Gymnastics sessions run on Saturdays from9.30am onwards. Trampoline lessons runon Thursday evenings.
C.A.T.S ClubOur holiday club is called the CATS Club(Children Active Through Sport Club). Thename reflects the fact that we want toencourage children to become more activewhilsthaving fun.This runsMonday toFridayfrom 8.30am – 5.30pm for children aged8 to 12 years. Supervised by qualified staff inthe ratio of 1 staff member to a maximumof 10 children, it offers a variety of activitiesthat are specially adapted for the childrenattending each day.
At Sporting Edge we aim to provide thesafest, best staffed, best-equipped, mostdynamic children’s holiday play scheme.OurHoliday Clubs are affordable and accessible,offering value for money and quality carewhere your children can build lastingfriendships andmemories. The CATS Clubruns during Easter, Summer Half Termand Summer school holidays.
C.A.T.S Plus +For those that wantmore of the CATS Club,this runs every Friday after school.
All our courses last approximately 10weekswith payments required for the wholecourse at the time of booking. Pre-bookingis essential asplaces are limited.Toenrol yourchild onour activities please contact SportingEdge. For Gymnastics an additional annualfee of £23.00 is required for membershipof the British Gymnastics Association.

Swimming
Swimming LessonsSwimming Lessons are available for adultsand children aged 4 years and over to caterfor all abilities from the non-swimmer tothe more advanced. Fully qualified andexperienced teachers lead our lessons in asafe and positive environment to build upconfidence in the water whilst workingtowards improving swimming ability andtechniques, and offering the chance to earnbadges and certificates in the award scheme.
Classes are grouped according to abilityfrom beginners to advanced, with normallyone teacher for up to ten swimmers, withlessons lasting for 30 minutes. Swimmersare assessed continuously and moved tothe most suitable class for their ability.
Lessons run on Mondays, Wednesdays& Thursdays from 4.30pm onwards andSaturdays from 11.00am onwards.
For those who want a more personalservice, private lessons are available.
There are many local clubs who train and play matches at Sporting Edge.Some of these are listed below and all welcome both junior and adult new members.

On reaching thebottom of Holborn Hill, after passingthrough Aughton, take the third exit at theroundabout into Aughton Street, keepingthe Fire Station on your left. At the trafficlight controlled T-junction, turn right, gothrough the pedestrian lights and right atthe next set of lights into St Helens Road.Edge Hill is half a mile up St Helens Roadon the left.
From Preston via the A59From the A59 take the B5319 signpostedOrmskirk Town Centre. At the traffic lightcontrolled T-junction turn left into the one-way system around Derby Street (keeping tothe right hand lane), Stanley Street,Knowsley Road and turning left into St He-lens Road. Edge Hill is half a mile up theroad on the left.
