GLAM-WIKI legal recommendations:

Pro-actively publish the copyright status of specific content in the online collection rather than blanket access statements for the whole collection.

Remove the policy that requires users to ask permission for use of public domain content.

Remove "clickwrap" and contracts which place copyright-like restrictions on public domain content.

Evaluate the relevance to the institution's mission of business models based on enforced scarcity of access.

The legal arguments are just that.

What about the moral argument?

If you love something, set it free.

“[The British Museum is] one of the broadest-ranging cultural collectionsin the world. Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, is the most consultedand largest compendium of knowledge ever compiled. By harnessing theexpertise of the British Museum and the reach of Wikipedia, this projectaims to bring mutual benefit to both organisations.” - @matthewcock

• Investigate ways of supporting Wikimedians who work on the institution's subject matter in a similar way to the institution's existing volunteer community.

• Create a Wikiproject about the institution's subject matter and/or invite local Wikimedians to tour the collection in a "backstage pass tour" and collaborate with staff.

• Create a rotating position of "Wikimedian in residence" to allow tertiary students to gain experience in the professional sector and to have their Wikipedia efforts recognised.

• Create Wikimedia accounts for on-staff experts (or the institution itself) listing their specialities to enable Wikimedia editors to obtain professional advice/feedback when improving relevant topics.

• Include Wikimedia in reporting metrics for outreach/access.

GLAM-WIKI educationrecommendations:

Quantitative & qualitative

In any given month, the BM’s website reaches

700k+ people. In the same period WP’s articles related to the BM (in English) receive

400k+ views.

Articles related to public art in Indianapolis, Indiana were seen 16k times in March 2010. Up from 2k in October last year.

We’re doing the same thing, for the same

reason, for the same people, in the same medium. Let’s do it

together.
