Today we will learn about a famous French

landmark that is in Paris.

The Eiffel Tower is the

tallest building in

Paris – 324 metres

high

250 Million people

have visited the

tower since its

construction, making

it the most visited

monument in the

world

It is considered one

of the 7 ‘Wonders’ of

the Modern World

We already know the 7 ANCIENT WONDERS:

The Eiffel

Tower weighs

10,000

tonnes.

It is made

almost entirely

of “puddled”

iron.

What makes the Eiffel Tower an

impressive piece of engineering is its

wind resistance. The reason is it has

a certain amount of elasticity, thanks

to the “puddled” iron.

Because steel expands when it gets hot, the Eiffel

Tower is six inches taller in the summer than in the

winter!

It is “rivetted” together = it is held

together by rivets.

2,500,000 rivets were used for

its construction!

Its nickname is “The Iron Lady”

because its shape looks like a bit like a

skirt and gives it an elegant look.

Gustave Eiffel was the

main architect and

designer.

Notice anything about

his name and the

tower’s name?

on the tower’s staircase.

This piece of the original staircase

was sold in 2008 for 80 550 Euros

to a Brazilian Businessman!

It was built for the 1889 Paris Universal

Exhibition. This was to celebrate the

centennial (100 years) anniversary of the

French Revolution.

These pictures show the different stages of

construction.

Two years, two months and five days – that’s how

long it took to build the Eiffel Tower, with construction

beginning in 1887, finishing in May 1889.

Here is a photograph of the ground works

for one of the ‘feet’ of the Tower.

Happy birthday! The Eiffel Tower just had its 131 birthday in

only 20 years,

France to

keep it,

arguing that it

could be used

as a wireless

transmitter.

It took

It took 300 workers to build it at the time. This was very dangerous. However, only one man died during its construction, thanks to Eiffel's stringent safety precautions and use of movable stagings, guard-rails, and screens.

Some French builders on the

Tower in 1889

At first people really disliked the Eiffel Tower

and called it an eyesore. They even

demanded that it should be put down.

Now it is considered to be a striking piece of

structural art!

So, how did people change their minds

about it?

It was the tallest building ever built at that time. This made French people proud.

Its structure is unique, being strong but looking gracious and light.

Made of metal, not stone, it has become one of the symbol of the Modern World.

Even though it weighs 10 000 tons, it puts no more pressure on the ground than a man’s foot!

This is because of its efficient design, with its wide feet.

Every 7 years, the Eiffel Tower needs to be repainted, in a light brown colour.

There have been many, many different artistic representations of

the Eiffel Tower over the years.

This one looks delicious!

We will try to make a 2D Eiffel Tower using match sticks.

Using straws…

…or match sticks

The Eiffel Tower has 2 floors and then the summit.

Look how the floors and summit are shown using the straws or

match sticks.
