The whole community collected bottle tops from everywhere! We were amazed at not only the

quantity but also the different colours and sizes.

We carefully sorted them in to different boxes. First into colours and then into more detail. We began to

think what we could use them for.

Our Librarian offered to help as she has experience with making murals. We asked one of our

supportive parents to help us with the ‘getting the lids to stick to a board and to get the boards

suspended’ bit. Both were very keen. Here we are discussing what adhesive will withstand the

Shetland weather.

Our Librarian brought us books like this to help give us an idea of what we might want

to create on our sea-themed mural.

We drew the design on the back of old wallpaper to get an idea of how it would look. We then started

putting the lids in place again to give us a good idea of the composition.

Meanwhile.. Our helpful parent, Phil, is off covering sheets of plywood in fibreglass to give the adhesive

something to stick to….

It was beginning to take shape… fast!

Some children even stayed in school late to help get it finished… without being asked! We loved the 3D

effect of the different heights of the lids.

We were happy! So the next day we started transferring the lids from the wall paper to the

plywood. We quickly realised that our gloves were going to get in the way. They didn’t stay on long!

We painted the top blue so it would show off the white writing.

Many hands make light

work!

So many bottle tops made us think about all the plastic bottles the lids had come from.
