EDI TodayLegacy EDI
Contributing to the productivity of the present-day economy through the rapid information exchange among major companies
BUT Lacking the flexibility and cannot
follow the rapid business change of the new economy easily
Requiring the intricate agreements and testing on EDI between the parties by the person in charge, before starting the business.
Being difficult to expand EDI world for SME’s because of the expensive cost and the special EDI skills.
Web EDI Easier to implement and to
access the electronic data when you just have a PC and a browser software.
BUT Requiring the human
operation always and inviting errors sometimes, because the web doesn’t provide the automation of the EDI data handling.
Being difficult to handle the rapid and frequent EDI messages through client/server based system depending on the human handling.
95% of Fortune 1000 are using EDIBut
Only 2% of other SME’s are using EDI
XML/EDI ebXMLStandardization
There is a solution.

Business Needs
Link traditional data exchanges (EDI or new XML) to business applications
Lower costs to configure new e-Business relationships
Create “Smart” Business Processes Provide a reusable set of core information
components Lower cost server and client based
solutions Protect investments in existing systems
KU-NECTEC I3T 6
XML is not enough
XML is a markup language XML does not solve business problems XML schemas do not provide any
semantics of business processes
XML by itself is not the magic bullet. What we really need is a dynamic
cross walk mechanism for XML-based vocabularies.
KU-NECTEC I3T 7
Goal: To provide an open XML-based infrastructure enabling the global use of electronic business information in an interoperable, secure and consistent manner by all parties
