NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR
Dear Reader, I worked very hard to compose this material to pull off a well-organized succinct ceremony that would honor all involved. It was a beautiful ceremony and I was very pleased, everything was accomplished on time and seemed to flow, which was my biggest concern. I know there are still many areas of improvement so any suggestions are greatly appreciated. (I still have two more sons to plan eagle ceremonies for.) This project was developed due to the lack of information, resources and material for the parents sponsoring the ceremony. I was unable to attend many of the troop's Eagle Scout ceremonies so without the help and dedication of the other mothers I could not have done this. There is a formal protocol to the ceremony and it became my quest to find out the how's and why's. I reproduced this ceremony into a book form for my son's troop as a gift to the other mothers facing this monumental task. My husband Michael the web guru has asked me to again publish this to help other mothers throughout the United States and other countries. I am so grateful to be able to share this with all of you. My sincere thanks to all the Scout Leaders, Families, Friends, and Church members. They so generously and unselfishly donated so much of their time. There is no greater honor for a parent than to have others support your child in achieving this rank. I am working to put this on disk to minimize the efforts of retyping the ceremony. Look for this in the near future. My goal for my son was to make this into a booklet for his memories and make it as presentable as possible so he and his children could cherish it. Unfortunately, I had to remove several graphics and emblems from the material to speed up the download time to you. I hope you find the material helpful and stress reducing. Good luck and God Bless. OPENING OF THE EAGLE COURT by

SCOUTING IS NO DOUBT ONE OF THE GREATEST ORGANIZATIONS IN THE WORLD TO FOSTER THE HIGHEST IDEALS OF CITIZENSHIP. IT IS LITTLE WONDER THAT SO MANY OF OUR NATION’S GREATEST LEADERS HAD SOME OF THEIR EARLIEST LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCES IN SCOUTING.
NOW SCOUTING IS CHANGING, BUT ONE THING REMAINS CONSTANT AND THAT IS THE TOTAL DEVELOPMENT FROM BOYHOOD TO MANHOOD DEPENDS ON THE PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND MORAL GROWTH EXPRESSED IN THE SCOUT OATH. THE SKILLS ARE SO DEMANDING AND THE CHALLENGES ARE SO GREAT THAT IT IS NOT SURPRISING THAT ONLY 2% OF ALL BOYS IN SCOUTING ACHIEVE THE RANK OF EAGLE SCOUT EACH YEAR. WHEN MOST BOYS ENTER SCOUTING THEY PICTURE THEMSELVES AS ONE DAY BECOMING EAGLE SCOUTS, BUT AS YOU KNOW THERE ARE TOO MANY ACTIVITIES, AND INTERESTS CLAMORING FOR THEIR ATTENTION AND THE FLAMES THAT WERE BURNING ASPIRATIONS, FLICKER, DIM AND DIE OUT. BUT TODAY WE HONOR A YOUNG MAN WHO HAS COMPLETED THE TRAIL TO EAGLE SCOUT, AN HONOR THAT REPRESENTS WHAT THE BOY WILL BE IN THE FUTURE AS HE GROWS TO MANHOOD. BY THE AUTHORITY INVESTED IN ME BY THE BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA, I HEREBY DECLARE THIS EAGLE COURT IN SESSION.

ON MY FACE IS THE MOTTO, ”BE PREPARED” AND SUSPENDED FROM ME IS A KNOT, TIED THERE TO REMIND YOU OF THE BOY SCOUT SLOGAN,” DO A GOOD TURN DAILY”. I AM THE FIRST CLASS. THE SYMBOL OF THE EAGLE GOES BACK TO THE ANCIENT TIMES, MAN HAS USED ME AND MY BROTHERS AS A SYMBOL OF ROYALTY, POWER, VICTORY, AUTHORITY AND VALOR. MY STRENGTH AND COURAGE HAS INSPIRED MEN THROUGH THE AGES. I HAVE SYMBOLIZED HUMANKIND'S FINEST AS RECORDED IN HISTORY. I HAVE SYMBOLIZED GOOD TRIUMPHING OVER EVIL, STRENGTH, BEAUTY, GRACE AND FREEDOM. ANCIENT MAN LOOKED UPON ME AS AN INVETERATE ENEMY OF SERPENTS. THEY SAW THE BATTLES BETWEEN THE SUN AND THE CLOUDS AS BATTLES BETWEEN THE EAGLE AND THE SERPENT. MANY ARMIES HAVE MARCHED UNDER THE EAGLE STANDARDS. THE SIOUX INDIAN WARRIORS DECORATED THEIR WAR BONNETS WITH MY FEATHERS. THE SYMBOL OF THE EAGLE FLYING TOWARD THE SUN HAS ENSPIRED MANY CULTURES TO ASSOCIATE ME WITH THEIR SUN GODS. THE ANCIENT ASSYRIANS ASSOCIATED ME WITH ASHUR, THE GREAT SUN GOD. THE MAIN GOD OF THE ASSYRIANS. I WAS AWED AND WORSHIPPED FOR MY MAJESTIC BEAUTY. IN THE ASSYRIAN MYTHS, I WAS A SYMBOL OF STORMS, LIGHTENING AND THE GOD WHO CARRIED SOULS TO THE REALM OF THE DEAD. ZEUS, THE RULER OF THE GODS. THE GREEKS REPRESENTED ME WITH WINGS OUTSTRETCHED HOLDING A SERPENT IN MY CLAWS. THUS, I REPRESENTED THE TRIUMPH OF GOOD OVER EVIL.

IN ROMAN CULTURE, I WAS THE SYMBOL OF JUPITER, THE SUPREME ROMAN GOD. THE ROMANS SAW ME AS THE SYMBOL OF VICTORY. AS THE ROMAN LEGIONS CONQUERED THE WORLD, THEY MARCHED UNDER THE STANDARD OF THE EAGLE WITH OUTSTRETCHED WINGS. THE SILVER EAGLE WAS THE SYMBOL OF THE REPUBLIC AND THE GOLDEN EAGLE THE SYMBOL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE. I BECAME THE PERSONAL EMBLEM OF THE CEASER'S, REPRESENTING SUPREME AUTHORITY.
THE PROFIT ISIAH WROTE, “THOSE WHO HOPE IN GOD WILL RENEW THEIR STRENGTH. THEY WILL SOAR ON WINGS LIKE EAGLES….” (ISIAH 40:31) THE RISE OF CHRISTIANITY BROUGHT ME MORE HONORS. TO SOME EARLY CHRISTIANS, THE EAGLE WAS THE SYMBOL OF THE ASCENSION OF CHRIST INTO HEAVEN. ON JUNE 20, 1782, I BECAME THE SYMBOL OF A NEW COUNTRY. BECAUSE OF MY COURAGE AND BEAUTY, I WAS CHOSEN TO SYMBOLIZE THE NEW UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. THE EAGLE BECAME A PROMINENT FEATURE OF THE SEAL OF STATE FOR THE NEW REPUBLIC. I BECAME THE SYMBOL USED ON MANY STATE FLAGS. YOU FIND ME ON COINS, ON THE DOLLAR BILL ON THE EMBLEMS OF THE PRESIDENT, THE PRESIDENT’S CABINET, AND MOST BRANCHES OF THE ARMED FORCES. HAVE YOU EVER REALY LOOKED AT THE DOLLAR BILL? THE BALD EAGLE ON THE BACK OF THE DOLLAR WAS SELECTED AS A SYMBOL FOR VICTORY FOR TWO REASONS: FIRST, HE IS NOT AFRAID OF A STORM; HE IS STRONG AND HE IS SMART ENOUGH TO SOAR ABOVE IT. SECONDLY, HE WEARS NO MATERIAL CROWN. THE COLONIES HAD JUST BROKEN WITH THE KING OF ENGLAND.

NOTICE ON THE DOLLAR THE SHIELD IS UNSUPPORTED. THIS COUNTRY COULD NOW STAND ON ITS OWN. AT THE TOP OF THE SHIELD, YOU HAVE A WHITE BAR SIGNIFYING A UNIFYING FACTOR. WE ARE COMING TOGETHER AS ONE NATION. IN THE EAGLES BEAK, YOU CAN READ “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” MEANING “FROM MANY ONE.” ABOVE THE EAGLE, YOU HAVE THIRTEEN STARS REPRESENTING THE THIRTEEN COLONIES, AND ANY CLOUDS OF MIS-NDERSTANDING ROLLING AWAY. NOTICE WHAT THE EAGLE HOLDS IN THE TALLONS-AN OLIVE BRANCH AND ARROWS. THIS COUNTRY WANTS PEACE, BUT WE WILL NEVER BE AFRAID TO FIGHT TO PRESERVE PEACE. THE EAGLE ALWAYS WANTS TO FACE THE OLIVE BRANCH, BUT IN TIME OF WAR, HIS GAZE TURNS TOWARD THE ARROWS. I'VE HAD THE HONOR OF BEING NAMED ON THE LUNAR MODULE, WHICH LANDED ON THE MOON, WITH THE FAMOUS WORDS OF EAGLE SCOUT, NEIL ARMSTRONG, “HOUSTON, TRANQUILLITY BASE HERE. THE EAGLE HAS LANDED”. IN 1911, FOLLOWING TRADITIONS AS OLD AS MAN HIMSELF, THE BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA CHOSE THE EAGLE TO SYMBOLIZE THE VERY HIGHEST IN ACHIEVEMENT. THROUGHOUT ALL OF HISTORY, I HAVE BEEN THE SYMBOL OF MAN’S BEST. THE EAGLE IS THE SYMBOL OF SCOUTING’S BEST AND CONTINUES TO FLY HIGH KEEPING HIS GAZE FIXED ON HIS GOALS. THE EAGLE SCOUT CARRIES A GREAT HONOR WHICH REPRESENTS THE VALUES EMBODIED IN THE SCOUT'S OATH AND SCOUT'S LAW. I AM A RARE CREATURE. WHEN YOU SEE ME FLYING, YOU CAN'T HELP BUT WATCH ME SOAR. YOU DIDN’T WIN THE FIRST TIME YOU RAN FOR PATROL LEADER, AND WHEN YOU DID WIN, YOU MADE PLENTY OF MISTAKES WHEN YOU TRIED TO LEAD YOUR PATROL. ________ entrance into this world was a joyous event to his family. He was born
_______________, the day after ____________ weekend, after three days of intense early
labor contractions. _________ is my first of four labors of love. When the nurse handed
________to me, he resembled a 5-pound sack of sugar. He only weighed a little over 5
pounds. He did not stay little for long; he is now about 6 feet tall and counting. I have
always equated his growth spurts to his eating habits. As some of you have discovered
after a day with ________he has a ferocious appetite, and consumes mass quantities at
mealtime.
Not surprising he has done this all his life. I never thought a little boy could be so
hungry and eat so much. He had me running to fix his meals. He would scream the until
the food hit his mouth, and if I did not feed him fast enough he would scream in between
bites.
_________ had an amazing talent of observation, curiosity, and determination. He
was ever so determined to climb the stairs, stack chairs or steps to reach new heights. At
about 7 months old, he tested his abilities by climbing on the outside of a gated staircase.
He looked at me and squealed with laughter and delight at his success, my heart stopped.
_________ never took a first step but instead stood up one day and ran across the
room. Those of us watching could not believe it. He ran from one end of the room to the
other. At 14 months old, he begged me to buy him a fat bat, a big plastic bat and ball. He
was able to hit 9 out of 10 pitches, showing off his coordination, I knew was in trouble.

He observed me tighten a loose screw on a doorknob one day. When I was not
looking, he found the screwdriver and unscrewed the doorknob I had just fixed.
We almost lost ______ at the age of 16 months when he became tall enough to
reach the safety latch to the backyard pool. He had watched diligently and with his
usual determination, and stealth opened the door and climbed into the pool. Luckily,
_____ had trained us well enough to panic and run in search of him the moment there
was quiet. ________ has given me many episodes of shear terror. He has sprained his
elbow, broken his finger, been shot with a BB gun, and while I was carrying him he
survived a vicious dog attack. I have thanked God everyday for the gift of ______ life
and his good health.
Since _____ was so rambunctious, I thought channeling his energy might be
helpful so I enrolled ________ in Tae Kwon Do, where he received his Red Belt prior
to us moving to _______________. I was ever grateful for these lessons in discipline
and the self-confidence he gained.
_______had always wanted to join the boy scouts and we had the good fortune
to join troop ______. So many Scoutmasters, Scout Leaders and Troop Officials have
played an important part in ________ life.

(date) I would first like to say thank you to all of you for coming and sharing this special day. I would like to thank all my scoutmasters, leaders and scout officials that have helped me through the years. Their encouragement, enthusiasm and examples have helped me to attain my Eagle. I want to say a special thanks to my Grandparents. My Grandma and Grandpa _____________, and Grandpa ________. They did not realize they were the decorating, cooking, and planning committee. They worked relentlessly and without them, this could not have been possible. They pushed me through the tough spots, and stood behind me not letting me fall. Then without the help of mom, my eagle would not be possible. She planned this all and with the help of my grandparents and my dad she was able to pull this wonderful ceremony off. When I first came into the Boy Scouts, I was extremely shy. However, as time went on I was more willing to take charge of the situations that challenged me. This is one of several qualities I have gained from scouting. The others are self-confidence, willingness to help, and always wanting to make people feel better. As I meet people, I try to leave a long lasting “good” impression on them that way I know I have touched somebody. I will also go out of my way to help people. People tell me I am outgoing. I believe that when I had to repeat the scout oath and law repeatedly it made me realize this is what a scout is. Looking up to my different leaders, I have noticed they also are very out going and will try to help people in anyway, they can.
