DRIVE USAThe USA is the perfect destination for a road trip. With wild, open, and astoundingly beautiful countryside, you can
drive for hours and hours and have the scenery all to yourself. There are so many iconic drives across this great
country it will be hard to pick just one. Whether you choose to explore the stunning coastlines, dense forests, vast
deserts and canyons, or want to see it all, this is the best way to experience America at your own pace. To make the
most of your trip and save money, make sure you know your rough itinerary BEFORE you book your flights. You can
often have internal flights included on your international air ticket at minimal cost. Plus you have the added benefits
of international luggage limits on domestic flights.
Getting around by carDriving is a great way to see more of a destination at your pace. Whether it’s cruising with the top down or navigating rugged roads in a 4WD, some of the most unforgettable moments of your trip will be behind the wheel.
GREAT FOR• The thrill and spontaneity of exploring the road less travelled.
• The freedom to travel at your own pace, whether meandering or direct.
• No timetables – simply set your GPS, switch on your playlist and go!
• Cover ground from A to B with no need to return a hire car to your starting destination.
• Why not cruise the California coast or Route 66 on a motorcycle for something completely different?
KEEP IN MIND• You’ll be driving on the right-hand side of the road.
• In most cases, persons hiring a car must be at least 25 years of age, have a valid driver’s license and a credit card for a security deposit.
• Your car should match your needs, such as having ample boot space to carry large suitcases.
• Check if your accommodation provides free or paid parking.
• When budgeting, make sure you allocate funds for fuel and toll roads.
• If you plan to pick up your car in one city, and drop it off in another, you’ll be asked to pay a ‘One Way Drop Off Fee’. This can range between US$50 and US$500 depending on the distance. There are currently exceptions if you pick up and drop off within the states of California or Florida.
Getting around by railSitting back, relaxing and watching the ever-changing view slide past your window, travelling by rail ignites a sense of nostalgia in all of us.
GREAT FOR• Fast, traffic-free travel between large cities.
• Everyone can sit back and enjoy the trip.
• Travel in comfort, with a wide range of seating options, including overnight sleepers (on select trips).
• Train stations are always central, so you generally will not need transfers from your hotel.
• No traffic jams!
KEEP IN MIND• Not all cities are serviced by rail, including some big ones like
Las Vegas or Nashville!
• Friday evenings or public holidays are busy, so try to avoid travelling at this time.
• Minimise your luggage, as limited space on trains and navigating platforms can be tricky.
• Pre-booking your train travel is essential, especially over peak times or if you need a sleeper.
CAR HIRE WITH ALAMOThe USA is a wonderful country to explore by car. The road network is extensive, with the interstate network crossing the entire country and conveniently numbered with even numbers for the east-west routes and odd numbers for the north-south routes. With wide open highways, and smooth, well-maintained roads, some of America’s greatest treasures can only be found outside the main cities.
Not all roads are free, so make sure you have a supply of coins and small notes ready.
The Australian driving licence is recognised and valid for driving in the USA.
Rental generally includes unlimited kilometres, Collision Damage Waiver, Third-Party Liability and 24 hour roadside assist, with things like a GPS and baby seats available to hire at an additional cost. If you are only travelling one way, make sure you check if there are any one-way fees applicable, as these won’t be included in your rental price.
MOTORCYCLE HIRE WITH EAGLERIDERIn 1992, EagleRider pioneered the Harley-Davidson® motorcycle rental concept and the guided motorcycle tour business. Today, they are the world’s largest motorcycle rental company and understand the needs of motorcycle enthusiasts and adventure travellers. They offer a huge selection of perfectly maintained Harley-Davidson, Honda, BMW and Indian motorcycles, and allow one-way rentals or guided tours between franchise rental facilities located in a number of cities across the country.
Rental generally includes a helmet and transfers, with things like event surcharges, EVIP theft and damage cover and GPS available as optional extras.
OUR FAVOURITE ROUTESThere are a lot of great drives across the USA. Here are some of our favourites
