Lesson One: Chibi Characters!

What does Chibi Manga mean?!

Chibi is a style of Manga/Anime-a type of very popular Japanese cartoon. (Anime is short for animation.) Manga is a style of comics and graphic novels from Japan.

The word chibi describes manga/anime characters that are very short and cute, have large heads and small bodies and VERY big eyes.

* A lot of Pokemon in their first evolution are drawn in the Chibi style!

1. Start by drawing an wide oval shape. The bottom of the oval will become your chin- make sure it’s a little pointy at the bottom.

2. Divide the head into quarters by drawing a soft or dotted line down the center and across the center. It should look like a plus sign.

3. Draw a second horizontal line halfway between the “eye-line” and the bottom of the oval. This this will show you how large to make the eyes! (Notice there’s no nose on the nose line!)

4. Draw a third horizontal line for the mouth halfway between the “nose line” and the chin.

5. Ears should be drawn between the eye line and the nose line.

Here’s another great step by step guide for drawing a chibi head. Notice the head starts with a circle instead of an oval!

Next you will add the eyes…Chibi style!

1. Between the eye and nose guidelines, draw 2 curved vertical lines- kinda like parenthesis.

2. Add a curved line above to create an eyelid. And a line at the bottom.

3. Draw a rectangle and square on one side like an exclamation point! These will be the shiny spots.

4. Shade around the shiny spots.

5. Add lashes and brows- brows should be little. Tiny lines give expressions.

Add CHIBI EYESThere are lots of different styles of Chibi eyes but this is a good place to start. Just follow the steps and make sure to leave lots of space between the eyes to make them big and wide!

Facial Expressions and mood

Facial Expressions and mood

Chibi noses and mouths are VERY SIMPLE!

NOSE: Some chibis have no nose at all. Others just have a dot or a shade line. Look at the examples for ideas.

MOUTH: The mouth can be as simple as a line or a shape, depends on the mood. Just make sure you keep it narrow enough to fit between the large chibi eyes!

Give your chibi hair!

Chibi hair comes in lots of styles- just make sure it’s extra big! It should extend beyond the top of the head.

Facial Expressions

Chibis often have a simple mouth and nose . You can add additional lines to develop the expression and add shading

Chibi Lesson 2: The Body

A Chibi’s body is twice as long as it’s head so it looks very small. -The neck is short and everything should be a little round. - See next slides fpr more guidelines

Start at the top of the head and work your way down to the feet.

- Add hair and details

- Erase guidelines

- Add color
