Dramatic Stone Statue of Elijah Mukhraka (Arabic word for “a place of burning”)
Carmel Range, Israel
COVER: My Heavenly Father Watches over Me Medley
A few shekelim (plural for the Israeli shekel—about the size of
our dime, but worth about 25 cents), and we are on our way to the
unsurpassed panoramic view from the top of the Carmel Moun-
tains—the traditional site of the meeting between Elijah and the 450
Baal prophets! (I Kings 18) Imagine being able to see Mt. Hermon
to the east and the Mediterranean to the west on a clear day!
The people of Israel had been seduced by the pagan cults of
Jezebel, the wife of King Ahab (eighth King of Israel, 871-852 B.C.).
Both Elijah and the prophets of Baal erected altars on which were
placed meat offerings, to see whose God would send down fire. Al-
though Elijah drenched his altar with water, his God alone sent down
fire from heaven, and Elijah’s offering burst into flames! When all
the Israelites saw it, “they fell on their faces: and they said,
The Lord, He is the God! The Lord, He is the God.”
