sought after career in our country. Each year more than eight lakh
boys and girls try to get admission into engineering cours- es in
numerous colleges and uni- versities. The rate at which new
engineering colleges are being opened by ambitious entrepre- neurs
is an indication of the popu- larity of engineering education. But
a vast majority of these wannabe engineers faces the dilemma of
choosing the right col- lege and course. Popular maga- zines,
newspapers and websites are going out of the way to help them make
the right choice by publishing their own league tables of colleges.
Let us look at some of the parameters that should go into deciding
which college is good and which is not. Firstly one has to ensure
whether the college has AICTE approval or NAAC accredi- tation. But
as far as the quality of faculty and student-faculty ratio are
concerned it is almost impossi- ble to get information. Even there,
there is little clarity about the exact meaning of recognition from
UGC or AICTE. At best it means that you can apply for a UPSC job.
If this is an option you want to keep open, go ahead and choose a
recognised programme. But if you are interested in good
application- oriented engineering programme, which would prepare
you for the real engineering jobs, you may consider some of the
British uni- versities programmes available, particularly in the
NCR. What is accreditation? The process of obtaining accredi-
tation in our country is quite flawed. Unlike what occurs all over
the world, our accreditation is largely connected with inputs (that
is, infrastructure) rather than the quality of education being
imparted. But it is better than nothing. So prefer an accredited
programme over one which is not, even if the whole process of
accreditation is quite suspect. On other parameters, you could
visit the websites of the various colleges and seek information.
But let me warn you quite upfront that most of the information
avail- able on the websites is advertising prose, and we are very
poor in ensuring truth in advertising. One glaring example is the
statis- tics on placements. Most colleges advertise 100 per cent
placements, whereas the placements are not even half of that.
Skills technical and communication So how does one choose a college
in such a scenario? Let us first talk about what does an engineer
do in the industry once he graduates from college? Engineering jobs
in the modern industry are essential- ly of two kinds one,
supervisory, which require planning and exe- cution, and the other
involving development of product and processes and improvements in
the products. Jobs of the first kind require general awareness,
habit of caring about the details, and good communication skills.
The jobs of the second kind require deeper technical skills, under-
standing of engineering principles and the ability to apply them.
Most of our colleges, outside of IITs and a (very) few NITs do not
provide adequate preparation for the second kind of jobs. If you
look at the league tables of the popular magazines, one thing that
immedi- ately stands out is: that the col- leges near the top are
all the col- leges that sell the lifestyle rather than their
education: the size and the grandeur of their annual festi- vals
and the coolness coefficient of their campus life. And there is a
connection between this and the placement. Companies go to col-
leges near the top of these tables because students from more
afflu- ent families join these colleges, with better awareness and
better communication skills. And believe me, most of the industry
are look- ing for people with superior com- munication skills,
general aware- ness, and good personalities; technical skills be
damned. Branches and disciplines We next come to the question of
choice of discipline, or the branch. Why is this choice so
difficult and complicated? The number one rea- son for the
difficulty lies in the fact that most of the kids have no clue of
what they want to do with their lives, except perhaps that they
want to pursue a degree pro- gramme that will lead to a job at an
MNC with a nice package. Much of the discussion amongst young-
sters these days is focused around placements and packages. In
fact, almost the whole education busi- ness today is about
placements. Most of the league tables compiled by various
publications are heavily biased by placement data (if not by
advertising space bought by the college). Candidates look for the
colleges with good placement records and seek disciplines which are
perceived to be in demand. Per se there is nothing wrong with
placement being a criterion. After all, a youngster is spending
money largely in the hope that it will be earned back. The com- mon
parlance also terms the expenditure by parents on their kids
education as an investment. But what alarms some of us is the fact
that hardly anyone talks about the quality of education being
imparted. It is taken for granted that placement is a measure of
how well the students are being taught. But believe me, it is not.
This is quite sad. A candidate should decide what she/he wants to
do with her/his life; work to achieve it, and placement would
follow. Let us first look at the choice of the course. What
programme has the most job potential? In my experience I have never
seen a good student in any branch of engineering having a problem
in getting a job. And if there is any discernible pattern
connecting placement to branch, I am afraid it has largely to do
with the fact that the harder working students go to more popular
branches, and they get jobs earlier than others because they are
better prepared. On the other hand, a student near the bottom of a
class, whatever be his or her branch, will always have a problem.
So forget about the job potential of a branch go after your heart,
and then work hard. I have always advised young persons that if in
the college of their choice a course is titled Kite-Flying
Engineering, and it fascinates them then go for it, provided you
work to graduate near the top. After all, the college will offer
that course only if at least some jobs are available in it. Follow
your passion If you know what you want to do, go ahead. You can not
go wrong. Many things decide what you may want to do. A role model
in the family, an aptitude for things mechanical, an interest in
fixing electronic equip- ment, a few words of encourage- ment from
your favourite teacher, the hobby that you pursued, all go to
develop interest in you. In any case, there is no way of predicting
what kind of jobs will be in demand in the year 2017. But be
careful that you understand what having an aptitude means. If you
love being on the Internet all the time with a 1,000 connects on
Facebook, it does not mean that computer science is what you are
good at. But if you do not know what you want to do? Then the
answer is sim- ple: choose a college, and select whatever is
available in that college for your rank. The Indian economy has
opened up in recent years and there are jobs in almost all fields.
The writer taught at IIT-Kanpur for 34 years. He was the first

engineering offer a perfect playing field. Nuclear engineering is a
branch that involves design- ing, constructing and operating
nuclear reactors besides breaking down of atomic nuclei and other
sub-atomic physics. Nuclear engi- neers are mostly absorbed in
research and development organi- sations, nuclear reactors and pow-
er plants which make weapons and war equipment. Nuclear engi- neers
have an important role in the field of medicine as they also
develop advanced nuclear imag- ing technology, which is useful for
diagnosing and treating diseases. In India, Nuclear Engineering
& Technology is taught at differ- ent university departments
and research institutes at both under- graduate and postgraduate
levels. There are also several research programmes in nuclear
engineer- ing at doctoral and postdoctoral levels. A good knowledge
of radiation sciences is desirable for students interested in
pursuing nuclear engineering. For admission to a bachelors degree
in nuclear engi- neering, all you need is a 10+2 in science with
the core subjects being physics, chemistry, and mathematics. A
clear understand- ing of the rudiments of physics and mathematics
is essential. Some institutes that offer cours- es in nuclear
engineering in India are, Jawaharlal Nehru Technolog- ical
University, Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, Kolkata, IIT,
Madras, IIT, Kanpur, Delhi Col- lege of Engineering, Manipal
Institute of Technology, SRM Uni- versity, Punjab University,
Sastra University and others. GoNuclear M ARINE engineering is an
ideal choice for those fasci- nated by the vast expanse of sea. It
deals with nautical archi- tecture and science. This branch applies
the principles of mechani- cal and electrical engineering to
develop, design and operate on- board systems like control sys-
tems and automation, machinery, power and propulsion plants, etc of
marine vehicles like ships, sub marines, etc. Supervising the ship
engines, repair and maintenance are the main responsibilities of
marine engineers. The job of marine engineers has broadened with
development and electronic navigation. Some of the job fields in
marine engineering are envi- ronmental protection, offshore oil
recovery, marine metals and cor- rosion, renewable energy, remote
sensing, naval architecture, defence, underwater vehicles, global
climate monitoring and marine transportation. There are a lot of
career opportunities in this field. Opportunities exist for marine
engineers, ocean engi- neers and naval architects in the private,

lists from India Today, Outlook and other surveys) Specialisations
vs general streams Should one choose an engineering programme in
one of the pure engineering branches like mechanical, civil,
electrical, etc., or the new specialised ones like mechatronics,
automobile, avionics, etc? This is an easy question: choose the
classical general branches. The reason some of these specialised
branches are offered at all is AICTE and its strange ways. Somehow,
the engineering colleges in the private sector got the impression
that it is easier to get permission from AICTE to add seats in
newer disciplines than to get increased seats in the existing
disciplines. This seems to be the reason of a branch like IT,
Instrumentation. In spite of the slogan that the future belongs to
specialisations; the fact is that an undergraduate education should
be quite general. An electrical engineer would easily get a job for
instrumentation, but an instrumentation engineer would face great
difficulty in getting a job in other areas of electrical
engineering. Same is true of automobile engineering vis-a-vis
broader mechanical engineering. It is for this reason that most of
the older IITs still continue to give degrees in classical
branches. In a growing economy, jobs are generated. And, there is
no dearth of engineering positions in the present scenario.
Therefore, getting placement should not be the prime concern of
those venturing into engineering. Just focus on your passion
BuildingBlocks Whattolookfor inanengineering college Does the
university have UGC approval or the college has AICTE approval ?
Does the university have NAAC accreditation? If yes, then what
grade? Does the college have NAB accreditation? What kind of
faculty does it have? How many teachers have Ph.D and MTech
degrees? Where have they obtained their highest degrees from? If
most teachers have their degrees from the college they teach at,
then be wary. What is the student-faculty ratio? (Anything greater
that 20 is bad news) Research output of the faculty. Sponsored
research projects by various funding agencies like Department of

Payne (Action) Cast: Mark Wahlberg, Mila Kunis, Beau Bridges, Olga

videogames do not achieve many play- ers (read viewers)? At least
some of them manage to attain a certain degree of en- tertainment
value, like Resident Evil, Hitman and now the most commercialized,
dhoom- dhamaka Hollywood offering of the week based on a violent
videogame May Payne. Max Payne lives up to the video gaming formula
and offers loads of action, drama, vi- olence, albeit with
characters that need no joystick to explode. The story also kowtows
the plot of the game with Max Payne (Mark Wahlberg) being an NYPD
cop who may be pushing files right now, but his insides are
seething with revenge. He is hellbent on aveng- ing the murder of
his wife, baby and his best buddy. And thats exactly where his pain
stems from. The outcome? He does not believe in heaven, but in
pain, fear, death and angels. No wonder hes all out Batmanish
ishtyle against a major pharmaceutical outfit figure in the form of
a winged demon (read Valkyrie) flying all over the NY city. Add to
that invin- cible super-soldiers, a leggy druggie (Bond babe Olga
Kurylenko) wish she had more screen time and a career assassin in
the form of Mila Kunis. All this and more, with a dash of Blade
Runner and Matrix (espe- cially the last action sequence) and
plenty of snowflakes drifting around in the constant dark backdrop.
But its Wahlberg, the Payned anti-hero, with an expertise with the
shotgun in umpteen stylized shootouts, who carries the predictable
plot forward. Also notable is the films backdrop: a drugged,
psychedelic land- scape spilling over with winged demons and
bizarre creatures of the netherworld. And just when you thought
alls well that ends well, stay tuned through the final credits a
code that promises a sequel in the from of Not yet done, Max. Any
takers? Why not, at least for the subtle message the movie pass- es
on through fun and games: Somewhere amid the noise and the
homicidal valkyries, Max Payne has a just-say-no-to-drugs mes- sage
and an anti-war/terror warning that needs to be handled ASAP for
the devil is building its army. Anyone listening? The Strangers
(horror) Cast: Liv Tyler, Scott Speedman Direction: Bryan Bertino
Youll find adequate boos in this film to give you your moneys
worth. Of course, you might end up feeling scared behind the closed
comfort of your fortified homes, but that really doesnt matter.
Because this ones a neat little chiller that creates fear out of
the familiar: dark corners in the room, peepholes that show masked
figures, walls that are in- cessantly battered with loud knocks,
glass panes that reflect strange images.... Liv Tyler and Scott
Speedman return from the woods to their home and hope to resolve an
unfinished quarrel before the night is over. But the night
stretches into infinity and the little domestic tiff pales into the
shadows as the duo are threatened by three strange, masked figures
who threaten to break into their house, for no reason at all. With
his hand held camera and his jump cuts, the debutant director
manages to cre- ate a smart horror flick. Nights in Rodanthe
(Romance) Cast: Richard Gere, Diane Lane Direction: George C Wolfe
When The Unfaithful, aka Richard Gere and Diane Lane turn faithful
in the cel- luloid version of Nicholas Sparks novel The Notepad,
romance is sure to be aplenty. Set in the picturesque town of
Rodanthe, the story focuses on the unhappily married Adri- enne
(Daine Lane), whose life revolves around her two children, her
career, a broken mar- riage, memories of her dead father. And her
buddy, Jane. Really sad. So she takes a break from her dismal life,
leaves her two kids with her husband and temporarily takes charge
of her friends picturesque North Carolina coastal inn. All she gets
to hear at the inn is that the hurricane is
a-coming...coming...com- ing. Till it finally comes. No, not the
hurricane, but Dr Paul (Richard Gere), one of those lonely
Jaguar-driving ge- niuses straight from the operating room. Now
thats another story that this lonely man hates to eat alone, drive
alone and be alone, even as he almost crucifies himself right
through the film for being a bad man, bad doctor, bad husband, bad
father, bad... bad... bad! But theres the hurricane, remember?
Thats the only bright spot in the dismal lives of the two inmates,
specially since it brings them to- gether in a clandestine
relationship. The har- ried twosome end up setting aside the woes
of the world and finding love and solace in the arms of each other.
The script is stale, the narrative tardy. What works is the
chemistry of Diane Lane and Richard Gere which has already been
dis- played in two films, The Unfaithful and The Cotton Club. Here,
they replay their passion as two damaged souls who serenade each
oth- er langorously through sealed envelopes, stamped letters and
weeks of waiting. No e- chats, no SMSes, not even telephone calls.
Truly, a period love song! CINEMA OF THE WEEK NIKHAT KAZMI Its

Movies A fter Bipasha Basu suddenly left Kashmir wh- ile shooting
for Lamhaa, producer Bunty Wa- lia and director Rahul Dholakia are
having second thoughts about her being the films lead actress.
Whether Bipasha will remain a part of the film or not will be
decided after she has a meeting with Bunty and Rahul short- ly.
Meanwhile they are looking at options to replace Bipasha if she
does not agree to trav- el to Kashmir one of the strongest
contenders to step into Bipashas shoes is Vidya Balan. Recently,
Rahul drove down to Wai (on the outskirts of Pune) to meet Vidya
for the pur- pose. A couple of weeks ago Bipasha had left the films
shooting mid-way and had flown down from Kash- mir to Mumbai.
Rumour has it that Bipasha received a call after which she was very
distressed. Suddenly she stalled the shoot and went inside her van.
She then cal- led up Rahul from inside and told him that she was
re- turning to the hotel. Rahul followed Bipashas van and reached
the hotel to have a talk with her. However, he was shocked to see
Bipasha packing her bags. When contacted, Bunty said, We need to
shoot in Kashmir for 10 days. I will start shooting from January 4.
I need Bipasha there. I have been given to understand by her that
she is averse to going back to Kashmir. But I think I will convince
her to do so. Rahul said, I need Bipasha in Kashmir. I am meeting
her for the same today. When asked if Bi- pasha would still remain
a part of Lamhaa even if she didnt agree to go to Kashmir, Rahul
said, I will cross the bridge when I come to it. Amrita says no to
