Dismounting Electromagnetic Clutch & Installing Alternator Support Bracket for Cummins Engine

2

Electromagnetic ClutchThe electromagnetic clutch assembly is basically made up of two sub-assemblies: the coil, which is mounted directly on the compressor body, and the clutch, which is mounted to the bearing hub.

The most common cause of clutch failure is excessive heat.

Excessive heat can be generated by frequent cycling of the clutch due to abnormal system pressures tripping the high and low pressure switches; or by damaged control elements (by poor contact in electric wiring, etc.)

Excessive heat can also be generated by leaving the coil energized while the engine is not running or no compressor drive belts are installed. Under normal operation, the coil is cooled by the pulley rotation.

Mounting and dismounting the LANG KK73 electromagnetic clutch on air-conditioning compressor, to mount the alternator support.

1. Unscrew M10 center bolt from compressor.

Electromagnetic Clutch

5

M16 bolt must have end rounded so it does not damage the crank.

Electromagnetic Clutch

Note: Instead of using a standard M16 bolt, an adapted M16 bolt can be used (part # 11359579).

6

2. Place a M16 x 2 x 50 bolt in the center hold. By screwing the bolt the pulley will be dismounted from the compressors crankshaft.

7

3. Unscrew the 4 M8 bolts and dismount the electromagnet.

Electromagnetic Clutch

8

4. Dismount the support of the (leak) drain hose by unscrewing the M10 bolt.

Electromagnetic Clutch

9

5. Mount the cylinder support by means of 3 M10 bolts. Torque with 42 Nm.

Electromagnetic Clutch

10

6. Mount the support of the drain hose at the back of the cylinder support with a M6 bolt.

Electromagnetic Clutch

11

7. Mount the 4 M8 (10.9) bolts. Torque with 25 Nm.

Electromagnetic Clutch

Note: Electric connection should be pointing down on right hand side.

12

8. Dismount the lock ring of the pulley with a set of pliers. By dismounting this ring the positioning of the clutch is easier.

Electromagnetic Clutch

13

9. Check if the crankshaft still has grease in it (Molykote), and mount the clutch on the crankshaft. Check that the key (half moon type) is mounted on the crankshaft and fits in the keyway of the clutch.

Electromagnetic Clutch

14

10. Mount the lock ring back to the clutch, and tighten with pliers.

Electromagnetic Clutch

15

11. Re-mount center bolt M12. Torque with 70 Nm.

12. Check, by turning the clutch, to ensure there is no play.

Electromagnetic Clutch

Note: Do NOT use any pneumatic tools to tighten bolt.
