Digital PhotographyHow to get a great shot

Choosing a formatMost cameras are designed to be

held horizontally for comfort, so most pictures are taken this way

But, when you turn the camera vertical, you will be surprised at the results

Sometimes the best way to compose a photograph is to use the tall and narrow format

Which works better?Horizontal

format Vertical format

A good composition is keyA composition is an arrangement

of things and an artist arranges things to pull the viewer to what is important in the work of art

If you have too many objects in your picture the viewer may be distracted and may not find what’s important

Try to use less, sometimes simplicity is best!

Where do you stand?Your position is a valuable tool

when capturing a great photograph

Try kneeling down to take a picture (worms eye view)

Take the picture from a higher vantage point (birds eye view)

Using the zoom lenses is also a great way to find the perfect shot, be experimental!

Rule of ThirdsRule of thirds is used often with

photographers as well as artistsImaginary lines are drawn

dividing the image into thirds both horizontally and vertically.

You place important elements of your composition where these lines intersect

Rule of thirds helps produce nicely balanced pictures

Get up close to your object and fill the frame

Taking a shot too far away doesn’t always make an interesting shot

Get up close to your object and fill the frame
