ABOUT ARTIST DIANE McCLARY

When painting, Diane McClary’s primary focus is on the color of the light that she sees in the scene. Her painting style has been influenced by her past studies with the brilliant Russian impressionist, Sergei Bongart, and his colleagues Ron Lukas and Sonny Apinchapong. Over time, Diane has evolved her own unique artistic style, which draws upon Bongart’s approach to painting and her own natural talents with color and composition. McClary is a plein air painter who favors the alla prima process of completing her on-location paintings in a single sitting. Later, in her studio, these small, carefully rendered plein air paintings often become the inspiration for larger works. Diane’s plein air work contains expressive brush marks, with a careful concentration on painting the color of the changing light. Later, in her studio, the best of her smaller sketches become the basis for her large signature canvases. By basing her larger paintings on the smaller plein air sketches, McClary is able to accurately recreate the mood, color and light of the original scene. McClary paints a wide variety of subjects, with work that covers landscapes in various regions from the Pacific Northwest to the Desert Southwest, still life, and figurative studies. Her love of the light, color and unique characteristics of the desert has made her a year-round resident of the Coachella Valley. Diane’s home and studio is located in a beautiful spot at the top of La Quinta Cove. A graduate of the University of Washington with a focus on both art and education, for more than 30 years Diane has taught workshops in still life and plein air painting in the US and in many locations abroad, including Africa and France. She has won numerous awards for her work and has had solo painting exhibitions in Washington, California, and Colorado, including the Frye Art Museum and Clymer Museum in Washington State. Most recently she was the poster artist for the 2012 Southwest Arts Festival, and her work was chosen for inclusion in the national touring exhibition, “America’s Parks Through the Beauty of Art”. Her pa inting, "Unexpected Snowfall at Joshua Tree" won a special Recognition award, which was recommended by Wildlife Art Journal Editor and Juror, Todd Wilkinson.
