A TO Z GUIDE
HOMEMAKEOVERSThe design vocabulary just like it’s erstwhile cousin, is meantto help you learn the alphabets. But how you choose to string
your sentences together is completely up to you. It is a handy guide to get you started with your home makeover or renova-tion of your project. We know doing up your home is no easytask. Those are crazy times: Tubs of paint, swatches of fabrics, rolls of wallpaper, and the seemingly unending number of
people who are walking in and out of your house. But trust us,it only gets better. So hang in there, make your own rules if you must, and don’t forget to follow your heart. After all, thehome is where the heart is.

Even if you
crave a
minimalist
space, there
will always
be everyday
essentials that
will need to be
packed away.
TTRENDSUpdate your existing pieces into
something new. For eg. mason
jars can be upcycled to create
mini terrariums, wooden pallets
from your old bed can be made
into a coffee table, etc.
Plan with the climatic conditions
in mind. For eg. North light is the
best light, so opt for windows in
that direction. Leather may not
work too well in hot and humid
weather, so avoid it.

TREND ALERT
BEAUTIFUL
BASICS
To layer, weave, stitch, pleat, crinkle, tarnish, flower, embroider, paint and ribbon. These are some of themajor themes that form the gathering concept.Edelkoort predicts a return to the rural; farming andgardening with a hint of romanticism.
Our homes will reflect a need for cocooning, andtranslate into spaces that nurture our relationshipwith ourselves and others. A soothing colour andmaterial palette with an arrangement thatencourages a sense of community will dictatethe look of this trend.

Work with natural materials, add a cashemere throw forwarmth, bring out your grandmom’s china, and put up your
photoframes. Think neutral colours, or even translucent oneslike ceramics, linens, potted plants (if a garden is a luxury
you can ill afford), plush sofas (for those long catch upsessions with friends) and soft rugs. The trend, “Gathering”,explains Edelkoort, “is meant to restore trust and faith in thecapacity of humans to work and play together.” So surround
yourself with things that make you happy. Because it’s timeto focus on the beauty of belonging.
“IT IS TIME FOR MENDING AND
GATHERING, RESTORING THE FABRIC
OF SOCIETY, PICKING UP THE PIECES
AND BRINGING THEM TOGETHER IN
A MULTITUDE OF POSSIBILITIES, A
QUILT OF SUBSTANCE, ABLE TO
ABSORB SHOCK”
- Lidewij Edelkoort, Trend Union, opening her presentationon “Gathering” at Design Indaba

EXPERT ADVICEWe got interior designer, Annkur Khosla, tointepret Lidewij Edelkoort’s trend and sharewith us tips and tricks to use in our homes.
When using a neutral palette, it’s a good idea to
incorporate different materials that create interest-
ing textures. It helps in keeping monotony at bay.
Wood is one of the easiest materials to work thistrend. It adds warmth and character.
Focus on alternating upholstery and linens; it’s the
easiest way to update a room.
Layer your sofa with a set of cushions. Add a
throw, make it inviting. The idea is to give a lived in
feel to your space.
Bring out those books you read, photographs from
that trip years ago. Your home should be about
you; it should tell a story about your journey.

YOUR INTERIOR STYLE
As a family we like happy, warm, cheerful spaces; so
our home is a reflection of that. Think bright coloured
cushion covers, art that we have collected from around
the world. We travel quite a lot so we pick up a lot of
stuff but try consciously to keep it uncluttered.
KIDS/PET PROOF SPACES
Keep breakable stuff at bay, away from their reach.
Use rounded edges where possible. Work with bright
cheerful colours in the kids’ spaces. Warm yellow
lighting will help create a wonderful ambience. Cliched
as it sounds, a home filled with love gives and gets
love! So don’t forget to fill it with lots of love!
QUICK-FIXTry new upholstery and cushions, they will do wonders.
Moving furniture around will also help and of course if
you are willing to go a bit further then experiment with
new paint colours or flooring options.
DOs AND DON’Ts
Focus on enjoying the process of doing up your home,
however if you are stressing about it, try and find
someone you trust to help you make decorating
decisions. But make sure you create a space you love
because eventually you have to live in it!
