Leadership

• How do we define our leaders?• What makes a good leader?• Who do you respect as a leader?

• What skills do you need to develop?• What type of support do you need?• Who would be a good mentor to help?

Leadership : 6 Words

• Work on your tables• Agree just 6 words to describe Leadership• You must reach consensus • You have just 10 minutes

• Put your words in order – most important first

Leadership : 6 Words

• Now consider Leadership in tough times – Crisis (financial, staffing, business)– Emergency (flood, fire, etc)– Personal crisis (incl. friends, family)

– which 6 words now represent good leadership – in which order

Cogs and Wheels

Looking after yourself

• As a leader its easy to look after other people …. but …..

• What about looking after yourself?• What plans do you have in place for

your own well-being?• How do you communicate your needs?• How do you develop your leadership?• How do you plan for succession?

Good Mentors

• Listen – confidentially and non-judgmentally• Hold up the mirror – reflect from new and different

perspectives• ‘Holy Fools’ – removed from your problems, asking

naïve questions is good• Highlight – home in on significant issues and help to

identify small issues• Don’t offer business advice!

Grint’s Socratic problem with leadership

“….my understanding has decreased in direct proportion to my increased knowledge; in effect, the

more I read, the less I understood.”

GRINT, K., 2000. The Arts of Leadership. Oxford: OUP.

A Show of Appreciation!

Help yourself to 3 chocolates

1 for you with our thanks

Give the other 2 to two people whose contribution you have valued this morning

Give them some feedback on why you selected them!

IF• IF you can keep your head when all about you

Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,• If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,

But make allowance for their doubting too;• If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,

Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,Or being hated, don't give way to hating,And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise

• If you can dream - and not make dreams your master; If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;If you can meet with Triumph and DisasterAnd treat those two impostors just the same;If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch,

…..
