8. Teaching & Supervision
a) Areas of Special Interests and Accomplishments
My approach to teaching is to encourage active engagement and participation from my students so that they can become creative, self-motivated, independent critical thinkers. I make every effort to directly engage the students in brainstorming about concepts on their own terms via small group discussions and through examples from the real world via problem-based clinical examples. My commitment and passion for teaching is demonstrated by the fact that I was awarded one of the 2009 Rippey Innovative Teaching Awards while at the University of Oregon. Moreover, since coming to UBCO in 2011, I have been named to the Teaching Honour Roll each time I’ve taught.

9. Scholarly and Professional Activities
a) Areas of special interest and accomplishments
The research taking place in my lab is focused on the neural mechanisms underlying human movement and how these mechanisms are disrupted by brain damage resulting from sport-related concussion. Since my return to Canada in 2011, I have received funding as a PI from NSERC, CIHR, and CFI totaling more than $600,000. The research resulting from this and previous funding has led to the publication of over 30 manuscripts in the last 6 years. More recently, I have undertaken an academic-industry partnership with Helios Global Technologies to investigate the concussion mitigation properties of a helmet liner material for which we were recently funded through NSERC Engage and MITACS Accelerate Cluster grants.

Approach to Teaching
When I am teaching, whether it be in a large undergraduate class or with an individual graduate student, my goal is to create an environment in which students are driven by their curiosity to want to learn. Tapping into that curiosity and nurturing it in a respectful and caring manner is, in my view, the key to successful teaching. I try to achieve this by listening to and challenging the students in lectures, assignments, group discussions, lab activities and one-on-one meetings.
I am fortunate to be in a field, human sensorimotor control, in which students can learn by doing. In particular, in classes in which I am trying to have students understand a particularly difficult concept, quite often I can bring clarity to the issue by having them actually perform a simple set of behaviours/maneuvers to demonstrate to themselves how their brain goes about planning and executing movements based on the available sensory information. It is also possible with a variety of video based demonstrations to illustrate how visual input in particular can be modulated by attentional and cognitive factors that ultimately have an effect on the responses that are made. In addition to using demonstrations in class, I also challenge students to understand theoretical and conceptual issues by making use of clinical case studies. This can bring home how concepts they are learning can find a practical application that ultimately may lead to a patient having an improved quality of life. If I am successful in having students understand this connection, then I feel that I have achieved a major goal in their education.
Commitment to Leadership
I feel that to be a full professor one needs to provide evidence of leadership. I achieved this by taking on academic leadership roles at the University of Oregon as well as at UBCO. At Oregon, I was the University Senate President in 2008-09. This role required a significant investment of time as I was responsible for leading the entire faculty in communicating and interacting with the academic administration on issues such as curricular content, athletics, academic policies, and alumni and government relations. In addition, I also took the lead in revising the structure of faculty governance during the period leading up to and following my time as Senate President. As a result of these experiences, I was able to appreciate issues from a much broader perspective than a typical faculty member. During my time at UBCO, I have been the Director of the School of Health and Exercise Sciences. The School has undergone tremendous growth during my 3.5 years on campus and my main responsibility has been to manage this growth while maintaining the quality and character of the program at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Research Program
The program of research taking place in my lab is designed to gain a better understanding of how the human brain is able to plan and execute body movements. We study this broad question in both healthy participants as well as in patients with damage to the brain due to a variety of injuries – most recently, our focus has been on concussion. For this purpose, we use state-of-the-art techniques including 3D motion analysis, eye tracking, and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). For our basic science research, we address questions related to the coordination between the eyes and hand, the interaction between cognitive/attention factors and motor output, and the predictive processes underlying motor planning and how they are implemented in the brain. For the clinically oriented research, we are currently focusing on the sensorimotor, cognitive, and attentional deficits following concussion. We make use of behavioral experiments to address these issues and examine how the resulting deficits are related to changes in the underlying physiology and microstructural integrity in the brain.
My program of research has been supported by sustained funding from a variety of US agencies including the National Institutes of Health, Department of Defense, National Science Foundation, and the Centers for Disease Control as well as more recent funding from NSERC, CIHR, MITACS, and CFI/BCKDF since returning to Canada (see Table 9.b). The basic science studies have been published in some of the best journals in the field of neuroscience including the Journal of Neuroscience, Cerebral Cortex, and the Journal of Neurophysiology. By contrast, our clinically oriented research has been published in highly respected clinical journals such as Brain, Neurorehabilitation and Neural Repair, and the Journal of Neuroengineering and Rehabilitation. I am regularly asked to provide grant reviews for agencies in the US, Canada, and the UK (see Table 11.e.ii). In addition, I am one of the Executive Editors of the Journal of Motor Behavior, the leading specialist journal in my field, and provide an average of 3 manuscript reviews each month for a broad range of specialist, clinical, and general science journals (see Table 11.e.i). Finally, the international stature of my research program is reflected by the fact that I have been invited to give talks in numerous countries including Australia, Denmark, England, Finland, Germany, South Korea, and Taiwan amongst others over the last several years.

Policy on Authorship
In the discipline of Health and Exercise Science and related fields the first author has the primary responsibility for conceiving of the question under investigation, collecting and analyzing the data, and writing the paper. The last author is typically the senior author in whose lab the research was conducted and under whose direction the first author (either as an undergraduate student, graduate student, or post-doc) was supervised. Co-authors between the first and last author contributed significantly to the overall research question and provided editorial comments to the paper.
