Advancing International Knowledge Transfer
INTRODUCTIONThe Design and Nature Conference is to be reconvened in 2010 following the success of previous meetings, the fi rst of which was held in Udine, Italy in 2002, followed by the second in Rhodes, Greece in 2004, a third in the New Forest, UK, in 2006, and the last one in the Algarve, Portugal in 2008.
Throughout history, many leading thinkers have been inspired by the parallels between nature and human design, in mathematics, engineering and other areas. Today, the huge increase in biological knowledge, developments in design engineering systems, together with the growth in computer power and the developments in simulation modelling, have all made more comprehensive studies of nature possible.
Scientists and engineers now have at their disposal a vast array of relationships for materials, mechanisms and control. The resulting laws have been painstakingly assembled by observation and analysis and span the cosmic scale of space down to the molecular level of genetics. In particular, they have made us aware of the rich diversity of the natural world around us.
It is these developments which have prompted the reconvening of this international conference on Design and Nature. It is intended that the meeting will bring together researchers from around the world working on a variety of studies involving nature and their signifi cance for modern scientifi c thought and design.

BENEFITS OF ATTENDING Conference papers are peer-reviewed by members of
the International Scientifi c Advisory Committee and other colleagues. Papers are rapidly processed for publication in hard-cover book form and distributed to delegates at registration.
Papers are also published in electronic format, and made available to the international scientifi c community through the Wessex Institute eLibrary http://library.witpress.com
Conference participants will be invited to submit an extended version of their paper to the International Journal of Design & Nature and Ecodynamics associated with WIT.
Papers presented at Wessex Institute Conferences appear regularly in notable reviews, publications and databases.
The opportunity to present your research within a unique forum and collaborate with experts from around the world.
OPEN ACCESSWIT Press is committed to Open Access. We strongly believe that removing barriers to research published online will greatly aid progress in many scientifi c and technical disciplines.
Advancing International Knowledge Transfer
Papers are invited on the topics outlined and others falling within the scope of the meeting. Abstracts of no more than 300 words should be submitted as soon as possible. We strongly encourage the submission of abstracts online.
Abstracts should clearly state the purpose, results and conclusions of the work to be described in the fi nal paper. Final acceptance will be based on the full-length paper, which if accepted for publication, must be presented at the conference. To be fair to all participants, each registered delegate will only be able to submit one paper.
The language of the conference will be English.

LOCATIONFamous for its leaning tower, the maritime city of Pisa lies at the mouth of the river Arno with Tuscan countryside to the east and the Mediterranean to the west. From pre-Roman origins, Pisa had developed into one of Italy’s most powerful cities by the early medieval period, leading to the creation of a wealth of medieval and Renaissance architecture and many monuments, which today characterise the city centre. The historic core, close to the river, is home to wide shopping streets and typically Italian piazzas, the most notable of which is the Piazza dei Miracoli where the Romanesque cathedral, Battistero and ‘leaning’ bell tower can be found close to many museums, galleries and restaurants.
