Profile of the Department
The Department of East Asian Studies (DEAS) is the largest area studies department in India
engaging in the research and teaching about China, Japan and Korea. It began as the Centre
of Chinese Studies in 1964. Japanese Studies was introduced in 1969, thus was renames as
the Department of Chinese and Japanese Studies. In 2001 Korean Studies was introduced and
the department acquired a new nomenclature as the Department of East Asian Studies.
Vision
The Department of East Asian Studies is committed to produce experts in the field of East
Asian Studies by providing high quality education that combines multidisciplinary social
sciences approach and linguistic training in the East Asian languages and perusing research
that can open new frontiers in this field which can lead to achieving higher academic
excellence in this area of specialization.
Courses Offered
M.A. in East Asian Studies (MA-EAS)
This is an inter-disciplinary course teaching about China, Japan,
Korea and whole of East Asia as region. It also included acquiring
language skill in one of the East Asian languages.
Admission to MA in East Asian Studies is taken on the basis of all
India entrance examination. We have total 39 seats in this course.
M.A. in Japanese (MA-JL)
This is a Master course in Japanese where the students learn about
language, literature, linguistics and cultural history of Japan.
Admission to MA in Japanese is also taken on the basis of all India
entrance examination. We have total 16 seats in this course.
PhD. in East Asian Studies
Those interested in becoming experts in this area, can pursue
research on one of the countries or any aspect of East Asia through
the PhD courses. Admission into PhD course is on the basis of all
India entrance examination, followed by a subjective written test and
interview.
Diploma programmes in Chinese, Japanese and Korean
Languages
We offer full-time post graduate diploma courses in all the three
languages. We also administer part-time language courses in the
college. Admission is done in the courses on the basis of entrance
examination conducted by the department.
