It is believed that apart from Fireand wheel the basic equipment 0fArchery, Arrow and Bow are per-

haps the third invention of mankind.From the study of its past history itcan be rightly claimed as the oldsport which is still practiced. Bowmaking and practice of archery wasfamiliar to Egyptian Indian, Chinese,and Ottoman civilization around1800 B.C. Archery is also rooted indifferent mythologies and religiousfaiths. As a sports archery began itsjourney 400 years ago. The fistEnglish archery tournament was holdat Finsbury which was attended byabout 300 archers. Archery wasincluded for the first time in the ParisOlympiad in 1900 for men. The 2004Athens Olympiad celebrated the cen-tenary of women's participation inthe Olympic Games. The fist interna-tional archery tournament was held in

1931. In the same year FederationInternational de Tir a Are (FITA) Iinternational archery Federation wasformed in low, Poland. FITA frameduniform and standardized competi-tion rules based on which the firstworld Archery championship washeld in 1972. The founding membersof this newly formed internationalgoverning body of archery wereBelgium, Poland, France andSweden. The newly formulated rulestook some fundamental aspects intoconsideration viz, evolution of easyand accurate method of shootingdevelopment of efficient bows andarrow and so on. Under the new rulesworld championship is staged bian-nually. The popularity of this oldestof the sports is progressively increas-ing. Now as many as 151 countriesare affiliated with the world govern-ing body FITA. Eight events are con-

tested inn the world Championship.Archery is of very recent origin inBangladesh. It had been in practiceby the aboriginal and tribal peoplefrom time immemorial. Archery wasginned the membership of the AsianArchery Federation on the 11thOctober 2002. Bangladesh ArcheryFederation organized the first eversouth Asian Archery Championshipin 2006 in BKSP. 4th Asian ArcheryGrand Prix 2009 (16-19 September2009)Kalkata, India, Bangladesh oneGold medal. We are hopeful aboutthe prospect of Bangladesh Archery.

Archery was introduced in BKSP inFebruary 2009. This Departmentcame in to being in the year 2009with Very limited facilities. After 1year BKSP Archer (Shiek Sojeb) wonSilver medal in the 10th S A Games2010 and Gold medal (BD menwomen and Recurv Men) in the 4thNational Archery Championship2010. 5th National ArcheryChampionship 2012 (29-31 March)BKSP Champion the above result itcan be inferred that even though theArchery department is the youngestin the Institute yet its achievementsat international level have mainlycome from Archery. In addition agood number of Archers haveachieved gold, silver and bronzemedals. The above achievementsspeak high of the sincere and dedi-cated efforts of the coach andtrainees of the department.
