Density

Density: The mass per unit volume of a material. g/mL

Density describes how tightly packed a substances molecules are.

Density formula: D=M/VD= DensityM= Mass (g)V= Volume (mL)

To find mass: Use a digital scale (Grams)

To find volume: Use water displacement (mL)

Water Displacement Process

If you have an object high in mass but displaces little water, then the object will sink in water. Example = Penny

Water Displacement Process

If you have an object low in mass but displaces a lot of water, then the object will float in water. Example = Marshmallow

4 Fun Facts

1. Water has the density of 1.0

4 Fun Facts

2. All matter has a density greater than zero.

4 Fun Facts

3. If an object has a density < 1.0 then the object will float.

4 Fun Facts

4. If an object has a density > 1.0 then the object will sink.

Good to Know

If an object has the density of very close to 1.0 such as 1.000005, then the object will suspend in water.
