Bridge management system
The level of service in function of maintenance
BRIDGE REHABILITATION
5
Fiber reinforcement of concreteThe most commonly used types of fiber :
• steel• polypropylene• carbon• synthetics• glass• nylon• polyester• polyethylene
BRIDGE REHABILITATION
6
Fiber reinforcement of concreteThe reinforcement of cement matrix with steel
fibers has contribute :
• increase in toughness and ductility• increase of flexural strength • short period of works execution• no need for conventional reinforcement• increased resistance to dynamic loading• improved control of cracking

BRIDGE REHABILITATION
8
Fiber reinforcement of concreteThe reinforcement of cement matrix with
polypropylene fibers has contribute :
• higher values of early compressive strength • precise and easy installation• the risk of corrosion has been avoided• the risk of reinforcement penetration on the
surface has been avoided• resistance to abrasion and impact has been
increased

Fiber reinforcement of concreteComparison of mechanical properties for polypropylene
reinforcement and regular concrete:
BRIDGE REHABILITATION
compressive strength in first 3 days ( 7 days) up to 20 %
compressive strength after 28 days up to 8 %
flexural strengths after 28 days up to 30 %
shearing strengths after 28 days up to 20 %
number of strokes prior to the appearance of first cracks between 10 and 20 %
number of strokes after the appearance of first cracks until the
final fracture up to 100%

12
Carbon strips and panelsThe strengthening with carbon strips is applied in
the cases as follows:• Load-bearing capacity expansion,• Damages, vehicle impact, fire or explosion,• Requirement for higher safety ratio in the
operation,• When the walls are put out, or holes inserted
onto the deck whereby the structural system is changed,
• Overcoming of design and execution errors, etc.

Carbon strips and panels
Different types of carbon strips and panels

Monoaxial
14
Carbon strips and panelsIn comparison to steel plates, the carbon strips
have several relevant advantages such as:• smaller weight• very high tensile strength (even 8 times higher) • small thickness• no potential corrosion• easy processing and fitting-in• flexible behaviour• lower cost of placing
BRIDGE REHABILITATION
15
Carbon strips and panels
Conditions of eligibility for bonding concrete :
• fat > 1.5 MPa if we use carbon strips(fat > 1.0 MPa if we use carbon panels)
• fp > 30.0 MPa
