35. PALEOMAGNETICS OF TERTIARY SEDIMENTS FROM THE SOUTHWEST ROCKALLPLATEAU, DEEP SEA DRILLING PROJECT LEG 811

ABSTRACT
Paleomagnetic data are tabulated for DSDP Sites 552, 553, 554, and 555, drilled on the southwest margin of Rock-all Plateau. No interpretation of these data has been given; because the results provide a particularly valuable record ofPaleogene and Neogene magnetostratigraphy they have, however, been provided here for use by the community.
INTRODUCTION
This chapter presents data from the shipboard andpost-cruise paleomagnetic studies of sediments and ba-salts cored on the southwest margin of Rockall Plateauduring Leg 81 of the International Phase of OceanDrilling of the Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP). (SeeTable 1, at end of chapter, and Figs. 1-3.)
The study was intended to extend the results earlierobtained during Leg 48 by Hailwood (1979). It wasthought that the paleomagnetic study would provide auseful source of information with which to constrainboth the age and eruption history of the lavas thoughtlargely to compose the suite of dipping reflectors. It wasalso thought that, by providing a more exact chronol-ogy, the identification of magnetic polarity reversals mighthelp in understanding the closely spaced events that pre-ceded and heralded the breakup of Greenland and Rock-all. Finally, it was hoped that detailed paleomagneticstudies of the late Neogene and Quaternary would con-tribute to studies of the evolution of North Atlantic pa-leoceanography and climate (Zimmerman, this volume;Backman, this volume). Unfortunately, time constraints,and changing circumstances in German universities since1981 which were beyond the control of the senior au-thor (the shipboard paleomagnetist), did not allow prep-aration of a written report. As the observations are ofpotentially great value, however, they have been tabu-lated for future reference, pending a subsequent fullreport.
PALEOMAGNETIC TECHNIQUESPaleomagnetic measurements on Leg 81 were carried
out with the equipment installed on Glomar Challeng-er—a "Digico" computerized spinner magnetometerfor measurement of discrete samples having volumes in

the range of 10 to 20 cm3, and a Schonstedt AF de-magnetizer enclosed in a mu-metal shield. A variablespeed, reversible, motor-driven system allowed automaticincrease of the demagnetizing field to a predeterminedpeak value, and smooth down to zero. The noise level ofthe magnetometer was usually in the range of 2 × 10 ~4
A/m to 6 × 10 ~5 A/m, and satisfactory repeatability ofmeasurements was possible for most samples using anintegration time corresponding to 23 to 25 revolutions.
Additional shipboard measurements were made onHPC cores using the long core spinner. In the case ofmany samples, further post-cruise studies were carriedout in the paleomagnetic laboratories at Bonn and atZurich to confirm and extend the initial measurementsmade at sea. At Bonn University the specimens weremeasured with an UGF 4 spinner magnetometer pro-duced by Geofisika, Brno (CSSR). The sample rotatesat 88 revolutions per second; the integration time is 1 or10 seconds. Demagnetization experiments were carriedout with the motor-driven system described above butalso incorporating a two-axis tumbling system. Duringdemagnetization, the Earth's magnetic field was com-pensated down to values 50 nT using Helmholtz coils1.4 m in diameter. The magnetic behavior of the RMvector was plotted automatically by means of demag-netization curves (Ir/Io) and Zijderveld diagrams. Thepaleomagnetic work at Bonn University was limited bythe resolution of the spinner magnetometer (2 × 10 ~5
A/m) and by the inconsistency of the specimen.Post-cruise studies were continued at Zurich Univer-
sity, using a two-axis cryogenic magnetometer for themeasurements. The demagnetization experiments werecarried out with a Schonstedt AF demagnetizer as hasbeen described. The results were plotted by means ofIr/Io-curves only.
Although the shipboard instruments, the spinner mag-netometer, and the AF demagnetizer at Bonn Universityare still calibrated in the cgs measurement system, theSI metric system is established at Zurich. Since the SIsystem should be used in all future paleomagnetic work,all data presented here have been converted to thissystem.

SAMPLING
In the relatively soft, unconsolidated and semicon-solidated sediments encountered in the upper parts ofthe holes, paleomagnetic samples were taken by push-ing plastic tubes (2.2 cm long and 2.5 cm in diameter)into the split core sections by means of a specially de-signed plunger supported by an aluminum bridge. Theends of the tubes were sealed with adhesive tape. In themore highly lithified material and basalts encounteredat deeper levels, either 2.5 cm-diameter cylindrical sam-ples were drilled from the cores or cube-shaped sampleswere cut by means of a diamond saw and trimmed toshape using a stainless steel scalpel. In all cases an ori-entation arrow pointing in the uphole direction was care-fully placed on the sample before it was removed fromthe core. Where inclined bedding was encountered andjudged to have resulted either from nonvertical drill pen-etration or from local movement of portions of the coreduring drilling, the orientation arrow was aligned per-pendicular to the bedding rather than parallel to the coreliner.
ASSIGNMENT OF POLARITY
Unlike conventional piston or gravity cores, DSDPcores are drilled by means of a rotating drill pipe (exceptin the uppermost, very soft sediments). This process cancause relative rotation (called "disking") between differ-ent parts of the core section, with consequent apparent
changes in the declination of magnetic remanence. Fur-thermore, the absolute azimuthal orientation of the coresis not normally measured, and relative azimuthal orien-tation is not maintained, from one 9.5-m core to thenext. For this reason the declination of remanence mag-netization is of limited use, except within individualcores in which disking is absent, or in the uppermostfew cores at each site, which are commonly drilled with-out rotation. During Leg 81a limited number of orient-ed cores were taken.
Consequently, in this study, magnetic polarity has beenassigned on the basis of the inclination of the stablecomponent of remanent magnetization alone. Since allsites are situated at moderate to high latitudes in theNorthern Hemisphere, positive magnetic inclinationsare taken to signify normal polarity and negative incli-nations are taken to indicate reversed polarity. Occa-sionally, in a series of samples taken from undisturbedportions of the same drill core, polarity reversals detect-ed on the basis of changes in sign of magnetic inclina-tion were corroborated by abrupt changes in declina-tion of approximately 180°.
