Tools you can use for your protection Jena Hare to teach senior defense class at Trinity Oaks
T hose who attend
Jena Hare’s Senior
Defense Class will not be
learning how to avoid
Medicare scams. Her class
is more physical than that.
Jena is the owner of a local
senior services company
with offices in Salisbury and
Concord. She earned a
black belt in karate.
“Jena taught two classes of
senior defense at the Cabar-
rus YMCA and both were a
hit,” said Teresa Dakins,
who works with Jena.
Participants in Jena’s class at
Trinity Oaks will learn first to
be aware of their surroundings
and how to use the tools they
have readily available. Tools
like the palms of your hands,
car keys, eyes and cane. They
will also learn what techniques
are not usually effective, like
mace. Jena teaches about ask-
ing for help from others and
how to prepare yourself for
possible danger.
“The target audience for the
class is active seniors. But no
matter where you are along
the health spectrum, you can
learn to defend yourself,” said
Teresa.

Month
November is Veteran’s
Month at Trinity Oaks
“I do believe I see Command Sergeant Major
Robert E. Trice, Sr. So good to see my Dad en-joying something that is so close to his heart. Thank you Trinity Oaks.”

T he Life Enrichment team planned a host of
activities for all the veterans at Trinity Oaks. A
highlight of the month was Warbirds Over Monroe, a full
day of World War II reenactments, air shows and dis-
plays of 1940s military airplanes.
On Veterans Day itself, veterans were special guests for
a parade under the portico at Trinity Oaks. Marching
bands from South, East and West Rowan High Schools
performed for a crowd of over 100. At noon, the vets
enjoyed a free lunch at O’Charley’s Restaurant in
Salisbury. The day concluded with “America The
Beautiful,” a concert of traditional patriotic songs by
the duo Suzanne and Jim.
Bob Tannehill attended the parade and was sitting
next to Sergeant Major Trice (see photo). His daughter
found his old Eisenhower jacket in her basement and
he borrowed a side cap from Bob Trice. For an au-
thentic look, he tucked in his tie like GIs in the 1950s,
but couldn’t get the jacket buttoned. “I’ve gained a
little weight since 1953,” he said. “It was a really good
event. The bands were great and the weather was won-
derful.” And the photo of him received 92 hits on his
daughter’s Facebook page.
