Day 1

Mystery Cells

- Start 2 New Pages (a left and right)- Add it to your TOC

Learning Target:

I can identify the differences between animal and plant cells.

The situation• Use a cup to draw 3 circles on each page (2 pages) in your SN.

The situation

• Police contacted the administration of Westwood Middle School early this morning. A dead body was found in the field behind our school. Investigators think it was murder and are asking for our cooperation to help solve the crime.

The situation

• “ We found no external marks on the body, suggesting no physical trauma. We did, however, recover some unique cells from inside the body that have been saved for analysis. Before we can determine what exactly they are, we need to decide whether or not they belong to a plant or animal species.”

Interview with the medical examiner

The situation

• In order for you to be of assistance to the police department, you need to learn more about cells, and the differences between them.

Research

You will look at ALL of the slides eventually, but only 6 today.

To learn more, you will use the classroom microscopes to view

slides of different cells.

Take your time to carefully draw what you see.

Today, you will look at each slide for 4 minutes.

1. Write down the number of the slide/microscope you are looking at.

2. Draw what you see in the circles in your science notebook.

3. Make a prediction - Is it a plant OR animal cell?

Write one! Explain why.

When you get to a microscope…

Let me show you…

1. Slide Number

2. Drawing

3. Prediction & Explanation(plant or animal)

Each circle should have 3 things…

Plant (why?)

Day 2

• Turn to your next open page.• Prepare to copy the chart on the next

slide.

• Fill in the 6 you already looked at.

• We will look at the other slides.• Fill in the chart for these too.• You don’t need to draw anything.• You will have ~1 minute per slide.

Plant/Animal Predictions

• Please respond to the following: (below your plant/animal chart or on the next open page)

1. Do all cells look alike?2. Give some examples of how they

are different.3. Give some examples of how they

are the same.4. Why might some cells look

different from others?

Day 3

Microscope Parts

1. Focus- Coarse Adjust

(large knob = large change)

- Fine Adjust (small knob = small change)

2. Magnification- 40x- 100x- 400x

Lets Practice!

• When I say “break,” go to the scope where you did your FIRST drawing and wait for instructions.

Lets Practice!

Day 4

The situationCreate-A-Slide

– Start 2 New Pages (left & right)– Add it to your TOC

• Today we will make some of our own slides.

The situation• Draw 1 circle on each page (2 pages) in your SN.

• Label one “Plant” and the other “Animal”

Plant Animal

• You are an animal.

• An elodea is a plant.

Prepare your own slides:

Plant = Elodea cells Animal = YOUR cheek cells!

Draw what you see in the correct circle!

Plant Cells(Elodea)

Animal Cells(Human Cheek)

Day 5

Plant and Animal Cell Comparisons

- Start a New Page- Add it to your TOC

- Copy the followingPlant1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Animal6. 7. 8. 9. 10.

• See pages 68-69 of your textbook. • Use the PICTURES at the bottom of

each page.

• Write down 5 observations EACH about plant and animal cells.– Try to find as many differences as you can!

Plant vs. Animal Cells5 Observations each (pages 68-69)

Copy the following Chart(bottom ½ of your page)

The situation

What have you learned or noticed about the shapes of plant and animal cells?

Plant:• Often boxes or square shaped (but

sometimes circles)

Animal:• Often irregular or circles (“blobs”)

Shape

The situation

What have you learned or noticed about the organization of plant and animal cells?

Plant:• Very organized (stacks and rows)

Animal:• Often random or clumped

Organization

The situation

What structures do plant cells have that animal cells do not?

Plant:• Cell Wall• Large Central Vacuole (LCV)• Chloroplast

Animal:• Lysosome

Structures

Plant Cell Part Function/Job

Cell Wall (pg. 68)

Large Central Vacuole (LCV)

(pg. 74)

Chloroplast (pg. 72)

Create this table on a new page. Use at least ½ of the page!

Functions/Jobs of Cell Parts• Please look over the following pages to

complete the table. Cell Wall – pg. 68 Chloroplast – pg. 72 Large Central Vacuole (LCV) – pg. 74

(HINT: Look in the table at the bottom of the page)

Use the HEADINGS to guide your search for

information!!!

WHAT IS THE FUNCTION OF EACH?

- TRY TO SUMMARIZE EACH USING ONLY 1 OR 2 WORDS!

Pair and Share

Plant Cell Part Function/Job

Cell Wall gives structure and support to the cell

This is why plant cells have a defined shape!

Plant Cell Part Function/JobLarge Central Vacuole (LCV)

stores water and other materials

When this isn’t full the leaves of your plant droop. This means “I need water!”

Plant Cell Part Function/Job

Chloroplast uses the energy from sunlight to produce food for the plant

This process is called photosynthesis and it is a chemical reaction.

Plant cells have:Cell Wall• Provides structure and support for the cell

Large Central Vacuole (LCV)• Holds water and other materials

Chloroplasts• Contain chlorophyll (= Green color)• Play a role in photosynthesis (= energy from Sun)

Mystery Cells - Evidence

The situation

The medical examiner has attached a copy of the microscopic views of the cells found in the dead body.• Draw the image in your science

notebook (Be Detailed!)• Write 5 or more observations (Be

Specific!)

Your task

Invading cells

The situation

• Next, submit your findings to the police department for formal review.

Make your claim AND support it with evidence!!!

ATTN: SLP Police DepartmentIt is my belief that the cells found in the dead body are . . . (plant or animal) I believe this because…
