Server Connectivity for Next-Generation Data Centers

Today’sITprofessionalsfacethedifficultchallengeofreducingdatacentercostandcomplexitywhilesatisfyingnumerousServiceLevelAgreements(SLAs)andperformancerequirements.Asaresult, organizations are seeking ways to improve serverandstorageutilization, reduceongoing operational costs, and increase theirflexibilityandresponsiveness.

Twomajorindustrytrendsaimedatreducingcost and complexity—server consolidation andvirtualization—havequicklybecomethehighestprioritiesforserveradministrators. Most data centers were designed to meet basic connectivity needs for physical servers, switches, andstorage. However, consolidationandvirtualizationdrivenewconnectivityrequirementsthatlegacysolutionsarenolongerabletomeet, suchasstreamlinedmanageability, increased performance, and virtualizationawareness.Performanceoftheapplicationsunderloadandmanageabilityare often critical concerns for organizations deployingservervirtualization.

Brocade® 415 and 425 4 Gbps Fibre ChannelHostBusAdapters(HBAs)andBrocade 815 and 825 8 Gbps Fibre Channel HBAs are a new class of server connectivityproductswithunmatchedhardwarecapabilitiesanduniquesoftwarefeatures.ThisnewclassofHBAsisdesignedto help IT organizations deploy and manage end-to-endStorageAreaNetwork(SAN)servicesacrossnext-generationdatacenters.

UNMATCHED PERFORMANCEWiththerecentadvancesinservertechnology,includingIntelNehalemprocessors,serversarenowcapableofrunningmoreworkloadsthanever.Thisdriveshigherconsolidationandvirtualizationratios,withmoreVMsbeingdeployedperserver,whichinturndrivesunprecedentedI/Orequirements.ThesuperiorperformanceofBrocadeHBAsprovidesthenecessarybandwidthandI/Opower for the most demanding environments (seeFigure2).

Ultimately,thismeansthatbusinessesofallsizescanscaletheirvirtualserverdeploymentsandvirtualizehighlydemanding applications with greater

OPTIMIZED FOR VIRTUAL ENVIRONMENTSInanon-virtualizedenvironment,everyapplication is tied to a physical server, which inturnconnectstoaphysicalSANswitchportina“static”manner.ApplyingnetworkpoliciessuchaszoningorQoS—ormonitoringapplicationperformance—issimplebecausethe application is permanently associated withthephysicalport.

Withservervirtualization, multipleapplications reside in a physical server and

BrocadeHBAswerebuiltfromthegroundupwithvirtualizationinmind.TheysupportNPIVwithupto255virtualports,andtheyarequalifiedwithallmajorhypervisorsolutionsintheindustry.LeveragingNPIVtechnology, organizations can not only extend Brocade fabric services to the server, butallthewaytotheVMandapplicationlevel.ServerApplicationOptimization(SAO)helps IT organizations avoid downtime and moreeffectivelymeettheirSLAsbyallowingthemtoapplyQoSpolicieswithaper-VMgranularityandensurethatmission-criticalVMswillnotbeaffectedintheeventofHBAlink congestion—even as they move across theinfrastructure(seeFigure3).SAOalsoprovidesisolationtoprotectindividualVMsfrom the effect of slow-drain devices that wouldotherwiseimpacttheentirephysicalserverandallapplications.

Optimal Support for Windows Server 2012 BysupportingWindowsServer2012,Brocade Fibre Channel HBAs enhance their abilitytosupportWindows-basedvirtualworkloads.Furthermore,theirsupportoftheHyper-VvirtualFibreChannelfeatureenables direct connectivity to Fibre Channel SANsfromwithinaHyper-VVM,allowingFibreChannelSANstoseamlesslysupportWindows-basedvirtualizedworkloads.SupportforFibreChannelinHyper-Vguestsalsoincludessupportformanyhigh-availabilityfeatures,suchasvirtualSANs,clusteredVMs,livemigration,andMulti-PathI/O(MPIO).

SIMPLIFYING SERVER DEPLOYMENT WITH DYNAMIC FABRIC PROVISIONING AND ENHANCED DIAGNOSTICS Dynamic Fabric Provisioning (DFP) allows organizations to eliminate fabric reconfigurationwhenaddingorreplacingserversthroughthevirtualizationofhostWorldWideNames(WWNs).ItcombinesBrocade switch and adapter technology toreduceoreliminatetheneedtomodifyzoningorLogicalUnitNumber(LUN)masking.Inaddition,DFPenablespre-provisioningofvirtualWWNs,helpingorganizationseliminatetime-consuming
