CONTENT WITHOUT CONTAINERWallace Learning Centre and the concrete ruin across the road shared the same function in the past as cow barns. However, Wallace Learning Centre is conserved on its exterior while the ruin showcases what the inside could be like. What used to be the inside is now exposed to the outside. The aim of this project is to recreate the indoor experience of the site at the same time, maintaining its outdoor quality.

MODEL

ROOFSAs plantation is desiged to invade the indoor spaces, rain drainage and sun light exposure are important for its survival. Roof is slanted in order to direct rain water towards the plants and away from the human inhabitants. Openings in the roofs are created to ensure that the plants can receive sunlight during day time.

WALLSWalls are made of concrete, as they grow and extend out of the concrete ruins. Similarity of the materials brings out the aging of the concrete slabs of the old cow barn. Slits in the wall at the entrance encourage the continuation of planta-tion growth. At 55cm above ground, the wall opening in the bedroom makes the inhabitant feel exposed to the outside once he lies down on bed. At 130cm above ground, visitors are immediately revealed to the outside once he sits on the bench.

INVESTIGATION

STUDY MODELS Of how nature can be brought into what is normally considered an indoor space. Experiments of roofs and walls explore the relationship between the inhabitants and the plants, i.e. how to enhance the experience of the humans with nature at the same time, create a reasonable condition for the survival of plants. Photographs were used to document the light quality of each study model, as light source from the direction of East is stimulated.

STUDY MODELInnitial design was mainly focused on the extension of concrete wall from the concrete ruin. Design was later extended to cover the whole site and more attention is given to the elimination of clear boundary between the inside and outside.
