Controls Industry Work Experience
My initial employment at Satchwell Control Systems was as a Service Sales Engineer which required self motivation, enthusiasm and self-management. It was important that I fully understood the needs of my Customers. As a consequence my ‘energy awareness’ improved, together with my technical understanding of appropriate building control strategies. I acquired an in-depth knowledge of computerized Building Energy Management Systems and their various applications.I developed the ability to identify and pursue opportunities, establish priorities of action, and understand presentation and promotional techniques. My success as a Service Sales Engineer lead to promotion as a Regional Sales Manager in April 1994, reporting to the Regional Manager. In this post I was responsible for the management of a team of four Sales Engineers.I was responsible for a Regional order input requirement of approximately 2.5 million which incorporated a personal target of 850k.I have personally secured contracts up to the value of 750k. I was further promoted in 2000 to the position of Regional Manager for the East Midlands Regional office with full P&L responsibility for both the Engineering and Support businesses. There were 26 people under my direct control.Following a Company restructure in April 2001 I became the Service Business Manager for the East and West Midlands Regions. I directly managed a team of 24 field based Service Engineers, Energy Engineers and Sales Personnel. In July 2002 I was further promoted to the position of National OMI Service Business Manager to focus exclusively on the growth of the ‘non Satchwell’ SLA orderbook and to ensure that our ‘in house’ expertise was aligned to the increase in business.I joined Novar in July 2004, and following the acquisition of Novar by Honeywell in 2005, I was promoted to the position of Strategic Service Development Director (and subsequently to National Service Director) with responsibility for transforming a struggling £6.5m business, with high SLA contract losses, low gross margins, poor Engineer morale, and an inconsistent Customer experience. In the period up to 2013, whilst I had national responsibility for the Service business, growth of 77% was achieved, and we attained a gross margin increase of 15 percentage points. In the same period, Engineer resource was only increased by approximately 20% reflecting increased efficiency and much improved management at all levels. In some years, SLA contract loses have been below 5%, indicating improved customer satisfaction. These considerable business improvements were achieved in the midst of an economic recession. In August 2015, I became the Regional Sales Director for the Central Regional, managing a team of six Business Development Managers, with a combined annual target of £13.9m.
Consultancy Work Experience
Prior to joining the controls industry, my work experience had been in a Building Services ‘Design’ environment with a Consultant and Local Authority.
I was responsible for the design, specification, tender and contract supervision of a wide range of Building Services projects from initial brief to hand over.
This involved a close liaison with Clients, Architects, Consultants and other interested parties. It was also necessary to consult with the local supply Authorities to ensure full compliance with relevant regulations and guidelines.I was responsible for contract cost and quality control and the supervision of Contractors and Suppliers.During my Local Authority employment I became involved in the post contract maintenance requirements of installations.I have been responsible for Domestic, Commercial and Industrial projects for both the Public and Private sectors. My experience includes the design of low and medium pressure hot water heating, gas and water services, steam, ventilation and air conditioning.
I have carried out feasibility studies/energy surveys and prepared subsequent reports highlighting recommendations and associated budgetary information.
