The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) will be released in December 2012. Students will be assessed on the new standards in the Spring of 2014.

Update on Science Standards A group of 20 states were selected to lead an important effort to

improve science education for all students. The 20 states will lead the development of Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), a state-led effort that will clearly define the content and practices all students will need to learn from kindergarten through high school graduation.

In July 2011, the National Research Council released A Framework for K-12 Science Education, developed by a committee representing expertise in science, teaching and learning, curriculum, assessment and education policy.

The Partners used the framework to guide the standards writing process, gather and deliver feedback from state-level committees in order to address common issues and challenges.

The draft standards were released in May. The science standards are currently under revision.

The NGSS should be completed by the end of 2012. Environmental literacy is part of the discussion around the Next Generation Science Standards.

The Kentucky Environmental Literacy Plan (KELP) has been created to ensure that graduates of Kentucky’s P‐12 education system will be environmentally literate.

Curriculum Implementation of KCAS for

English/Language Arts and MathDistrict Curriculum Maps are currently being

entered into the new CIITS Curriculum Mapping Module.

The District will be aligning their lesson plan template with the KDE CIITS lesson plan format.

New Assessment System

• Fall 2011 offers the first test administration to begin Kentucky’s new assessment and accountability system.

• Unbridled Learning: College- and/or Career-Ready for All replaces CATS.

• Kentucky-Performance Rating for Educational Progress (K-PREP) replaces the KCCT.

• The first reporting of Unbridled Learning will occur in fall 2012.

K-PREP The new assessment for grades 3-8 is a blended model built with

norm-referenced test (NRT) and criterion-referenced test (CRT) items which consist of multiple-choice (mc), extended-response (er) and short answer (sa) items. The NRT portion, the Stanford 10 (Pearson), is a purchased test with national norms and the CRT portion is customized for Kentucky

Grades 10 and 11 take Writing On-demand which is a also a Pearson assessment.

Students completing English 10, Biology, Algebra II, and U.S. History take the Quality Core End of Course Assessments.

SB 1: K-2 AssessmentsSenate Bill 1 (KRS 158.6453(9)) requires schools

to enroll primary students using diagnostic assessments and prompts that measure readiness in reading and mathematics.   These assessments must be developmentally appropriate.  Schools may use commercial products, locally developed products and procedures, or develop their own diagnostic procedures.  The following guidelines are provided for districts to consider when purchasing or developing an appropriate diagnostic assessment.
