This course is designed primarily to introducestudents to the spread of Korean popular culture andthe literature based on this cultural phenomenon inthe context of globalization. In this course, studentswill examine the paradoxical co-existence ofnationalism and transnationalism in contemporaryborder-crossing cultural engagements. Through thisexamination, students will rethink the notion ofpopular culture in the context of increasingtransnational collaborative relations,globally andlocally. Students will be equipped to critically andanalytically examine the establishment of popularculture’s spectatorship within and beyond its border.Students will also learn different perspectives on theinfluences that the screening culture produces onand off the screen. Primary texts include literature,film, and television. All readings are in English.
