Varietal trail screening for TR4 resistance

• Banana Plant Protection Program

– BA10020

• Assessing 27 Banana varieties

for resistance to TR4

• Trial taking place at Coastal

Plains Research Farm (NT)

• Planting occurred in June 2016

www.nt.gov.au

Varietal trail screening for TR4 resistance

• Currently 15 months into trial and

26 of 27 varieties now in first ratoon

• Trial includes 4 reference varieties

– Williams (Susceptible)

– GCTCV 218 (Tolerant)

– FHIA 01 (Resistant)

– FHIA 25 (Highly resistant)

• This talk mainly focuses on the

health of the mother plants

Symptoms of Foc

• External symptoms

– Splitting of the pseudostem

– Yellowing and eventual wilting

of older leaves

– Death of leaves

– Death of plant

• Internal symptoms

– Discoloration of xylem

tissue

Criteria assessed

Disease assessments

• Assessments done monthly,

once infections became

promininantly fortnightly

• Presence of external

symptoms

• Death dates of plant

• Presence of internal

symptoms upon death

Agronomic assessments

• Date of bunch emergence

• Plant height at bunch

emergence

• Date of harvest

• Bunch weights

• Presence of internal

symptoms

www.nt.gov.au

Susceptible varieties

• Extensive disease symptoms

• Williams

- Death before harvest

• DPM25

- Death before

bunching/harvest

• Dwarf Parfitt offtype

• SH-3362 Auto-tetraploid

– No signs of bunching, cut down 12

months after planting

– No symptom observed

• M. acuminata ssp. banksii

– North QLD Native

– Approx. 40% died in the first 6

months (unlikely due to TR4)

Conclusions

Assessments of 1st ratoon plants is ongoing

– Determine if resistance seen in Mother plants also apparent in ratoon

plants

Several varieties have shown promising resistance to TR4

– Agronomic characteristics may not be ideal in their current state

– Resistance vs. acceptable market quality (need both)

– Promising candidates have been selected for Mutagenesis in attempt
