A. Before we begin, write down a few ideas about what you think critical thinking might be. Don´t
worry about being right; just write anything that pops into your head.
B. Now take a few minutes to watch the video clip your teacher has prepared for you. When it is
finished, read the paragraph on the next page and answer the questions about it. You do not
need to use complete sentences.

THINKING OUTSIDE THE BOX
The phrase “think outside the box” is used a lot in English. Most people do not know
where the phrase came from, but some say that it started with the introduction of the
“9 Dots Puzzle,” which teaches a very important lesson about creativity. This puzzle first
appeared in a puzzle book in 1914 and has become very popular. A person is given the
puzzle and is told that they must draw through all of the dots with 4 straight lines
without picking up their pen. Most people find this to be very difficult because they do
not realize that the simple—and creative! — solution is to draw outside of the “box”
formed by the dots. The lesson to be learned is that you should not limit yourself but
should instead learn to think creatively: outside of the box.

WHY THINKING CRITICALLY?
6 051-eng-wb1-(CriticalThinking)
C. In the bubbles below, write what was different about each set of questions on pages 4 and 5.
- Which questions were the hardest for you?
- Which were the easiest?
- Were the answers facts or opinions?
- Which questions did you have to think about the most?
LET’S DISCUSS!
7 051-eng-wb1-(CriticalThinking)
The last questions that you answered were the ones that really made you think. The answers could not
be found in the paragraph. You had to use what you read in the paragraph to help you think of the
answers. THESE questions are questions that make you use your CRITICAL THINKING skills!
Critical Thinking is …
1) higher-level thinking 2) thinking creatively 3) thinking “outside the box” 4) problem-solving 5) _______________________(add your own)
And so much more!
Let´s see how we can use Critical Thinking to solve problems and think about things in a
new way… Read the questions carefully and remember to think outside the box.
CRITICAL THINKING
If it takes six men one hour to dig six holes, how long does it take one man to dig half a hole?
How many seconds are in a year?
You are running in a street marathon and you overtake the person in 2nd place. What place are you now?
What five letter word becomes shorter when you add two letters to it?
A boy was rushed to the hospital emergency room. The ER doctor saw the boy and said, "I cannot operate on this boy. He is my son." But the doctor was not the boy’s father. How could that be?

A. Today, we live in a world that is full of technology. Every single day, we all use many kinds of
machines to make things easier for us, to help us communicate, to help us work in a better way,
or to entertain us. Take a moment to think about some of the technology that you and your
family use every day or several times a week. As you think of them, write them in the thought
bubble below.

The Smith family is thinking about turning off their TV for 7 days, but they have some questions and want
your advice. Talk to the other members of your group and see if you can help the Smiths. Write one or two
sentences in the box below each question.
1. Danny Smith (11 years old) asks “Why turn off the television for a whole week? Can’t we do it for just one day?”
2. Sally Smith (13 years old) asks “Is all TV bad? What about the Discovery Channel?”
3. Mindy Smith (15 years old) asks “Do we have to plan a family activity every night?”
4. Mrs. Smith says, “I need some peace and quiet time in the evening. The television keeps the kids busy while I fix dinner.”
5. Mr. Smith says “I can't afford to take the whole family out for some fun activity every night. That would
be very expensive.”
ADVICE TO THE SMITH FAMILY
14 051-eng-wb1-(CriticalThinking)
Turning off the TV is a great way to improve your health and your family’s health.
Watching less TV helps you to get more exercise and eat a healthier diet. When you watch TV, you sit still for long
periods of time. And all those television commercials for fatty, sugary, salty foods also encourage an unhealthy
diet. One study found 8 commercials for unhealthy foods during every 10 minutes of TV time.
Did you know?
98 percent of American households have at least one TV.
The average adult, by the age of 65, will have spent nine years watching TV.
Children watch an average of 27 hours of TV a week. By age 18, the American child has spent more time
watching TV than time in school.
Studies show that children who watch a lot of TV are more likely to be overweight or obese.
Read the questions and discuss with your partner.
Write and be ready to share the answers.
1) Why is the idea ‘turning off television’ important? _____________________________________________________________________________________
