My name is Dr.Timothy Kitzmiller and Ihave sleep apnea. I startedsnoring when I was in mylate 20s.

Over the years my snor-ing got worse and I wouldwake myself up with agasp or a snort. My wife,Lori, was increasingly hav-ing to wake me up to stopsnoring or start breathing.

I finally decided thatafter 23 years we bothdeserved a quiet night’ssleep A recommendationwas made to do anovernight sleep study tofind out if I had the life-threatening conditioncalled Obstructive SleepApnea.

To my surprise I foundout that I was not onlysnoring but stoppedbreathing 28 times perhour!

It was recommendedthat I start using aContinuous PositiveAirway Pressure (CPAP)machine. I struggled withit since I like to sleep onmy side and stomach.

I could finally relate toour patients’ complaintsabout mask leaks, strapmarks on their face, sinusproblems and feeling likeDarthVader. I didmy researchandenrolled inspecialtraining toprovide aCPAP alter-nativecalled an Oral Appliance.

It is a medical devicethat fits over the teeth andholds the lower jaw for-ward, keeping the airway

open. I now experiencequiet, unrestricted, healthy sleep wearing myOral Appliance.

My wife is thrilledbecause now she gets a

great, quiet night’s sleepwithout snoring and does-n’t worry about me suffo-cating all night.

We’d love to hearabout your struggles withsnoring, sleep apnea andCPAP. Give us a call at(513) 248-8848 to scheduleyour complimentary con-sultation and learn howOral Appliance Therapycould be the solution foryou, too!

Nearly 2 million people willacquire an infection while hos-pitalized in 2010, and nearly100,000 will die as a result, according to the Centers forDisease Control and Prevention.

Speaking up for yourselfand taking ownership of yourown health care can help youfrom becoming a statistic.

Poor hand hygiene andcatheters are two of the mostcommon causes of hospital-acquired infections.

Patients can prevent theseinfections by knowing the causesand monitoring them. Here aresome tips for patients on how totake a more collaborative, activerole in their hospital care.

Hand hygieneIt’s your right to remind a health care

provider to sanitize his or her hands beforetouching you or your surroundings while

you’re in the hospital.Multiple studies have

found hand hygiene is sorelylacking in hospitals, with bestpractices being followed as lit-tle as 20 to 30 percent of thetime in some cases.

Patients should also beaware if surfaces are disinfec-ted regularly. Bedrails, tablesurfaces and many items in apatient’s room need disinfec-tion, as well as telephones, remote controls, call buttons, stethoscopes, blood pressurecuffs and portable shareddevices such as blood glucosemeters and hair clippers.

Doctors andhospital staff

diligently work toensure that every

patient experiences asafe and positive

hospital stay. Yet, notall doctors or staffs

can guaranteeperfection, leaving

patients at risk.

Well, it’s Halloweenonce again, the time tohand out and collect waytoo much candy! The cos-tumes are fun and thetrick or treating is anadventure, but theamount of candy the kidscollect is scary!

Not only should wesort through their candyfor safety purposes but weshould consider thinningout the pile a little. Mostchildren will eat candythree times a day for thenext month. Most of usallow this because it was“free.” The fillings that

may be required due toexcessive consumption ofcandy, however, are notfree as we all know toowell. Want to hear an evenscarier thought? If hard orchewy candies are eatenwhen teeth are alreadydecayed or broken thepotential for further dam-age is almost inevitableleading to more extensivedental work such as a rootcanal, crown, or – worstcase scenario – the loss ofa tooth.

To give younger patientsincentive to part with their“loot,” Mortenson Family

Dental is handing out spe-cial Trick or Treat bags thatcan be returned to the officefull of candy through themonth of November inexchange for $5 cash perbag. Now that’s a treat!!!Stop in and pick up yourTrick or Treat bag beforeHalloween!

Local court houses andairports have offered theirscanning services to checkcandies and treats formetal objects. This is justanother way you as a par-ent can help to keep yourchildren safe during thisspooktacular holiday.

Too much of a good thing?

Dr. Tara Dallmann andher staff know that a lot ofyou are afraid of the den-tist. They have created ano-stress environment justfor you.

The team is ready andwaiting to take your calland they know the butter-flies you suffer while pick-ing up the phone to sched-ule an appointment.Understand that you aretheir normal type ofpatient and you will not bemade to feel guilty for notseeing a regular dentist.

Catheter-associated infectionsWhile most hope

they’ll never need a uri-nary catheter, the reality ofhospitalization is that onein four patients will needit at some point duringtheir stay.

Catheters can lead tothe most frequent type ofhospital-acquired infec-tion, a urinary tract infec-tion (UTI). In fact, 40 per-cent of all hospital-acquired infections arecatheter-associated UTIs.

Maintaining the sterili-ty of the catheter andapplication kit minimizesinfections.

Some catheterizationkits are packed in a singlelayer with each item –gloves, antiseptic swabs, drapes and so forth –available in the orderthey’ll be needed. This

helps the clinician followthe best practices for avoid-ing infections, but you, thepatient, can also do yourpart.

In addition to remind-ing the nurse about handhygiene, you can continueto ask “Why do I need thiscatheter, and when is itgoing to be removed?”

Studies show that if thereasons for the catheterand its “remove by” dateare noted on a patient’schart before the catheter isplaced, they don’t stay inas long.

Shortening the time acatheter remains in placereduces the risk of a UTI.Doctors don’t have achance to “forget” that apatient has a catheter, remembering to order itsremoval.

Today, everyone in thepicture gets a say. “Thedoctor” may now really bea team of doctors, nurses, specialists and assistantcare providers with plentyof other people monitoring

the patient’s care. If patients want to take

it further, the websitewakeupdoctor.org states, they can ask for anotherdoctor if they find out heor she has been workingmore than 10 to 12 hours.

Clearly in an environ-ment such as this, thepatient can exercisegreater control over his orher own treatment andprevent hospital-acquiredinfections. In the future, the patient may be expect-ed to play an even largerrole. There is an abun-dance of information fromhealthcare providers anda broad scope of Internetsources – ranging fromreliable and trustworthyto questionable and dis-honest.

The question for mostof us will be: “How do Imake myself the bestpatient and the best advo-cate to help ensure thebest outcome from mytreatment?”

The Bellevue homeowner never expected tobe treated as well as hewas by the staff at RoofTime.

In fact, their attentionto detail and dedication toquality craftsmanship lefthim breathless.

“They went above andbeyond, they exceededmy personal expectation,”Batchalor said. “The finalproject is great, it’s out-standing. It was doneright.”

The work done to hisFairfield Avenue homewas extensive. The RoofTime team stripped three

layers of roof from thethree-story high house, added 16 inches of OwensCorning fiberglass blow-in insulation, replaced theaging box gutters andrebuilt his chimney.

Roof Time used theOwens Corning’s 30-yearDURATION, Energy StarShingle. This shinglereduces utility bills byreflecting the sun.

In addition, Batchalorqualified for the $1,500 taxcredit. Batchalor will saveenergy, make his homequieter and more comfort-able and improve hisproperty value.

He adds, “I invited 12different companies andtook two years to decideexactly what I wanted. My bids were all over theplace from $6,000 to$16,000. It was ridiculous! The staff at Roof Timesubmitted a bid in 2008,stuck with their ideas andanswered all my ques-tions promptly and pro-fessionally each and everytime!”

Roof Time conducts a

Falling is the leading cause of injury anddeath among people 65 and older, accordingto the Centers for Disease Control andPrevention. And if you look around yourhome, or your loved-one’s home, you proba-bly can find many tripping hazards, increas-ing the risk of a fall.

Here are some tips you can follow to helpyourself or your loved one continue to liveindependently in their own home and age inplace safely:

• Incorporate walk-in showers in yourbathrooms, so you don’t have to climb overthe edge of a tub. Premier Care in BathingInspire Walk-in Shower or Refresh Walk-inShower have Delta brand shower heads, shower chairs in case you need to sit down, secure hand rails and leak-free construction.

Alternatively, Premier also has a broadrange of walk-in baths, which are versatile

enough for any member of the family to use,but provide the safety equipment needed tohelp keep older members protected fromfalls. Visit www.premier-bathrooms.com orcall 800-925-0865 and ask for more informa-tion about walk-in baths or showers.

• Install telephones in every room, andhave a cell phone always charged and acces-sible. Communication is important, and hav-ing a phone easily accessible can determinehow swiftly help arrives in an emergency likea fall.

• Switch under-counter shelves into pull-out drawers, so you or your loved one don’thave to get down on your hands and kneesto find something at the rear of the cabinet. This not only helps prevent falls, but alsoprevents strains on the body from bendingover.

• Install as much extra lighting as you canaround the house. This includes nightlightsand extra light switches at all door entrancesso nobody ends up stumbling around in thedark.

• Create safe walking passages. If looserugs are lying around, consider removingthem. Check to see if any of the flooring inyour house is slippery. You might want toconsider installing carpet - not only to get ridof the slippery floor, but also to keep feetwarmer as well. Also, review the layout ofeach room. Keep entrances clear of lamps orfurniture so someone doesn’t accidentallybecome bruised from bumping into them, ortripping and falling to the floor.

Aging in place isn’t overly difficult, andyou can keep yourself or your loved one safeat home, and living in comfort with some ofthese tips.

While your neighbors maypull out all the stops decoratingoutdoors for Christmas, an over-the-top Halloween display canalso earn you a place in neigh-borhood lore. The Halloweendecor experts at online retailerSeventhAvenue.com offer sometips to consider as you create aspooky playground to impressthe trick-or-treaters:

• Know your audience. Itmight be a good idea to match thelevel of scary in your Halloweendecorations with the age of thechildren you expect to come trick-or-treating. For younger children, think fun. Older kids mightappreciate a good scare.

• Choose a theme. Halloweenis the perfect holiday for creativi-ty, so when it comes to the front

yard, don’t limit yourself.Decorations that center around atheme are the most impactful andwill delight children when walk-ing to your doorstep. You couldchoose something as simple as agraveyard theme, leading visitorsthrough a path of gravestonesand creaky gates, with zombiedecorations for good measure. Oruse ideas from your favoritescary movie. If you need ideas, try browsing outdoor Halloweendecor at online retailers likewww.seventhavenue.com.

• Direct traffic. Now thatyou’ve chosen a theme, thinkabout how you want your gueststo experience it, beginning withthe sidewalk and ending withyour front door. For example, ifyou went with a Dracula themeyou could lead your visitors to

the front door with lights thatresemble chandelier candles.Solar lanterns could also be usedto light the path, as they won’tleave you burning through bat-teries or electricity. Well lit signscould also be used to lead visi-tors through a scavenger huntthrough your front yard.

• Dress the part. To makeyour theme really work for you, wear a costume to the door thatgoes along with it. It’s a greatway to get in touch with yourinner child and to thrill the kidsin your neighborhood.

• Safety first. While it’s greatto create the scariest yard on theblock, you should also makesure it’s safe. Walkways and haz-ards like ponds or stairs shouldbe well-lit.

• Get help from nature. Thetrees in your yard make a greatplace to hang spooky decorations.Use old grass clippings to give aspookier feel to zombies andgravestones. You can use leavesas stuffing paper for bags and fig-urines, filling them with life.

• Treats matter. We all knowthe number one reason kids lookforward to Halloween is thebounty they’ll bring home froma long night of trick-or-treating.Considering that everyone elsewill give out candy, make yourhouse more memorable by giv-ing a toy related to your theme.Or, give glow bracelets that arenot only fun but will also keepthem safe by making them visi-ble in the dark.
