ReflectionDr. Colleen Hagen, CIN Medical Director

Pandemic
What if you thought of it
as the Jews consider the Sabbath–
the most sacred of times?
Cease from travel.
Cease from buying and selling.
Give up, just for now,
on trying to make the world
different than it is
Sing. Pray. Touch only those
to whom you commit your life.
Center down
And when your body has become still,
reach out with your heart.
Know that we are connected
in ways that are terrifying and
beautiful
(You could hardly deny it now.)
Know that our lives are in one another’s
hands.
(Surely, that has come clear.)
Do not reach out your hands.
Reach out your heart.
Reach out your words.
Reach out all the tendrils
of compassion that move, invisibly,
where we cannot touch.
Promise this world your love–
for better or for worse,
in sickness and in health,
as long as we all shall live.

Pharmacy Drug Conservation Efforts
Strategies to manage drug shortage:
1. Meeting with AMITA-wide pharmacy leadership daily to update inventory levels on our drug tracker
2. Leveraging Ascension and The Resource Group buying power
3. Engaging our primary vendor/wholesaler
4. Deploying around the clock critical medication procurement strategies
5. Working directly with drug manufacturers
6. Reaching out to state and local government
Conservation strategies have been developed for:
1. MDIs: Refer to the Pulmonary and Critical Care Playbook for guidance on when to use nebulized
options vs. MDIs
2. Tocilizumab: Criteria can be found on the AMITA Health COVID-19 Website under “Pharmaceutical
Guidance”
AMITA Pharmacy Services continues to focus on managing inventory and utilization of all vital medications,
including pharmacologic options for COVID-19 treatment, paralytics, analgesics, sedatives, etc.

AMITA Health COVID-19 Daily Dashboard – At a GlanceUpdated: April 2nd

Our request to you -When appropriate, please develop accelerated admit
and discharge plans for stable patients to increase bed
availability in the Emergency Room and our floors
during the surge
24
Hospital PreparednessKenneth Jones, President, AMITA Health St. Francis Hospital Evanston
25
Hospital Preparedness – Surge PlanningAMITA Health has developed a five phase Surge Plan. Each phase contemplates a progression from cohorting
in place to use nontraditional spaces for the care of patients requiring treatment. Figure 1 demonstrates the
progression and venue types considered for surge planning.
Traditional:Phase I Cohort in place
Phase II Expand into other clinical spaces/Potential
Cohort Covid acute patients
Non-traditional:Phase III Expand into non-acute space within hospital
(e.g., cafeterias, conference rooms, fitness centers)
Phase IV Expand into owned, non-owned, hospital-
based acute patient care facilities (within a 10-minute
proximity)
Phase V Expand into non-healthcare use space
• Phase V a. | off-campus, ambulatory, subacute
spaces, hotels, schools, or dormitories (min.
capacity 50 beds)
• Phase V b. | large open spaces like school and
college gymnasiums, and convention centers (min
capacity 200 beds)
• Phase V c. | large modular built COVID-19
Treatment Facilities (Bear Construction) or
other types of large venues, such as the McCormick
Place, Copernicus Center, Allstate Arena, Sears Ce
ntre Arena, etc.
26
Chicago Metro Region/Draft – Phase IV, Phase Va, Phase VbCurrently the Alternative Options Workgroup is gathering information on all community organizations and
establishments offering partnership.
Key considerations:
1. PPE and supplies
2. Ventilators and associated critical care equipment/supplies
3. Telemedicine capability
4. Staffing: Critical care expertise/Respiratory Therapy
5. Facilities/negative pressure availability
6. Continuum of care/geographic scale
7. Pharmacy: supply of Propofol, Benzos, Morphine, Fentanyl
Surge Planning Model Assumptions:
First-come-first-serve scenario
1. Existing capacity is filled with patients regardless of illness
acuity.
2. Offering low risk patients Phase IV and Phase V capacity from
day 1 would allow ample designated areas for moderate to high
risk patients
3. Will examine triage based on severity of illness rather than
location availability

Testing for COVID-19

safely managed at home.
• The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) will only accept specimens from:
• Hospitalized patients with severe acute lower respiratory illness (e.g.,
pneumonia)
• Clusters in a congregate setting that serves more vulnerable populations,
such as a supportive care facility, assisted living facility, group home,
homeless shelter or correctional setting.
