Your thoughts on our February bargain issue!
I first discovered Country Living in
the 80s and have loved it ever since.
My mother raised three children
in a small house, but that didnt stop
her from filling it with beautiful
things. The clever DIY projects in
this issue are so similar to her
way of decorating, which she called
make do. Im glad to see another
generation keeping that spirit alive.
Camille Carpenter, Houston, Arkansas
The February edition was beyond
terrific! There were so many great
inspirations and how-tos, like the DIY
globe lamp in Idea Notebook. My sub-
scription is in good hands!
Frances Barlow,
Pacific Palisades, California
I have a copy of every issue of Country
Living since the magazine debuted
in 1978, and Im excited to say that
this is the best one in years! And,
its back to a smaller sizehooray for
that! I look forward to more.
Sandi Theiner, Hillman, Michigan
I really enjoyed finding out what
you can do on a budget in the February
edition. Taking less-than-perfect
vintage or antique pieces and integrat-
ing them into ones home is a
wonderful idea. I cant wait for next
months Country Living!

Neighbors let Jacqueline Smith (left) and Sarah Hoffmann graze their flock on unused land.
Making a Country LivingA physician and her former babysitter teamed up to start a DAIRY FARM.
While on maternity leave in 1998, internist Sarah Hoffmann decided that rather than going back to

she hired college student Jacqueline
Smith to babysit, she gained a business
partner to boot. We share the same

Made in AmericaCentury-old FULLER BRUSH still crafts cleaning tools.
In 1905, Alfred C. Fuller was a rookie door-to-door brush salesman. He
quickly found that many of
the wares he was peddling
didnt appeal to the target
consumer: female home-
makers. So in 1906, Fuller
hung his own shingle in
Hartford, Connecticut, and
grossed $8,500 in cleaning
tool sales that year.
1908 Fullers wife, Evelyn,
joins the sales force, outsell-
ing her husband on her first
dayand nearly every day
for the next two years.
1923 The brand brings in a
record $15 million with hair-
brushes, dusters, and more.
1940s In addition to sup-
plying the military with
millions of weapon-cleaning
implements, Fuller outfits
soldiers with toiletry kits.
1950 Hello, Hollywood! The
Fuller Brush Girl, starring
Lucille Ball, hits theaters.
2013 From its Great Bend,
Kansas, factory, the firm
reissues wood-handled clas-
sics for its new 1906 line.

Potlucks with PanacheA multicourse sit-down affair isnt always feasible (or fun) for a host. So in her new book, Handmade Gatherings ($34.95; Roost), North Carolina homesteader Ashley English flips the script. She shares ideas for 16 all-hands-on-deck soirees, including a wild things bash that has guests foraging for outdoorsy table decor and chowing down on pickled ramps and a morel-and-mozzarella frittata. Englishs fuss-free, communal approach is ideal for joyfully informal parties. And we say cheers to that!

Umbrellas from the 1940s through the 60s were
much sturdier (and prettier) than todays $5 models.
You can score pop-ups on Etsy for as little as $25, with
handles made of wood, Lucite, or even gem-encrusted
metal. For mint-condition twirlers like the ones pictured,
Seattles bellaumbrella.com has you covered.

A family friend gave my parents this chest almost 50 years ago. Any clue what it was used for? K.J., Wayne, New Jersey
WHAT IT IS: MId-19TH-CeNTURY WRITING deSkYour container is modeled after the portable cases that town
scribes would carry to the market square, where theyd pen letters
and documents for villagers. This brightly painted version has
a small, central drawer in the front for storing writing implements
and ink, while the top lifts up to hold paper. The geometric and
floral patterns suggest a Middle Eastern piece from the mid-1800s,
and its surprisingly decent condition makes it a real prize.

Hatch ombr Easter eggs with food coloring. You can create this dramatic dis-play with just two 0.25-ounce vials of blue dye you may already have in the kitchen. Set out six 12-ounce glasses, labeled A through F. Add one cup of boiling water and two teaspoons of white vinegar to each and stir, using a separate spoon for each glass. Then, mix in the color as follows: A, two drops; B, six drops; C, 10 drops; D, 20 drops; E, 45 drops; F, 60 drops. Submerge a hard-boiled egg in each glass. Steep for five min-utes, or until youre happy with the hue, then remove and place in an empty egg carton to dry. Repeat with additional eggs (up to three dozen).

These DIY trays recall the wares of artist John Derianonly ours cost just a few bucks a pop.
Step One Download the image of your choice (originally from thegraphicsfairy.com) from countryliving.com/decoupageart. Each image is presized to fit the glass trays shown here (narrow, $8.46; 6"W x 12"L; wide, $9.25; 8"W x 11"L; behrenbergglass.com). Use a laser printer to print out the image, at home or at a copy shop.
Step twO Flip your tray upside down. Spray with glass cleaner and wipe down to remove any fingerprints or residue. With a sponge brush, spread a layer of Mod Podge over the trays back side ($5.99 for 8 oz.; plaidonline .com). Place your image, right side down, atop the Mod Podge, then quickly flip the tray right side up and gently center the image. Smooth the paper against the glass, then place the tray wrong side down again. With a clean wine cork, roll out any air bubbles until the paper fully molds to the glass. Let dry 30 minutes.
Step three Use Mod Podge to adhere a plain white piece of paper atop and flush against the back of the image. Let dry 30 minutes.
Step FOUr Cut away any excess paper around the tray edges with a craft knife. Then, seal the white piece of paper with another layer of Mod Podge. Let dry 30 minutes.
Step Five Following the instructions of Speedballs three-part gold-leaf kit, apply adhesive, gold leaf, and sealer to the trays back side; then trace around the edges of the tray with a gold-paint marker (Composition Gold Leaf Kit, $10.97; Krylon leafing pen, $6.55; dickblick.com). Let dry.
Step SiX Use your tray to gather trinkets, or mount it, as we did here, with a plate hanger.
Give dcoupage a fancy upgrade.

Recycle printing blocks as toothbrush holders.Rebecca Proctor offers a novel take on this sink-side necessity in her book Recycled Home ($19.95; Laurence King). To fashion your own, mark a spot on the top of a wooden printing block, available on Etsy for about $6 to $10 apiece. With a drill bit slightly larger than the thickness of your toothbrush, drill vertically into the mark, 1 to 2 inches deep. (If needed, drill additional holes on either side of your mark to widen it.) Once your toothbrush fits inside, use a smaller drill bit to make a hole in the bottom of the block, directly beneath your first hole. Drill enough so that the two holes meet, allowing water to drain through the block. Finally, protect the wood (inside the holes, too!) with a coat of spray-on resin (Castin Craft resin spray, $6.95; tapplastics.com).
Bust out the bleach to design this celestial splattered fabric.Making over plain cotton upholstery fabric requires nothing more than a house-hold disinfectant and water. Working outside, and wearing protective eyewear and gloves, lay the desired yard-age for your project flat on a sheet of plastic. In a mea-suring cup, mix together cup bleach and cup water. Use a plastic spoon to drib- ble the liquid all over the fabric. When youre satisfied with the pattern, let dry, then run the fabric through a regular cycle in your washer and dryer. Take it to a local upholsterer (we sent ours to tapemeasure design.com)or use it how-ever youd like.

Set up a command center. Holden arranged a row of three tables from Cost Plus World Market, surrounded by a dozen steel stacking chairs from overstock.com, smack-dab in the middle of the room. A carpenter apron tied to each seat holds tools and journals for workshop attendees, and lamps act as task lights. Large burlap apronsfor protecting clothes when things get messyhang at the ready.
Heres an idea that sticks: Liberate tape from its drawer. To create this vivid tableau, Holden dropped wooden berry boxes into the slots of a $30 flea- market fabric-dye display, then sorted her collection by color. I use my washi tape all the time, she says, and now its easy to access and looks almost like artwork.

Vintage tins can corral just about anything. In this case, its markers, paintbrushes, and art pencils. I buy these canisters for their typography, says Holden, a graphic designer by trade. At yard sales, theyre just as cheap as plastic bins, and so much better looking.
Give supplies the candy-store treatment. An antique nine-foot-high apothecary cabinet offers ample shelving. But to curb chaos, Holden groups items togetherstraws, stencils, etc.in an assortment of new and vintage glass jars (the largest ones are Anchor Hocking pieces from Walmart).
The genius way to keep string straight? Let diner-style sugar dispensers do the work for you. Place the containers on a shelf inside something sturdy (Holden used a tool trug), and screw an eye hook into the shelf below each one. Drop in a spool, then thread the string through the spout and the eye hook. Finally, mount scissors nearby to make snipping a snap.

Put glitter in its place. Keeping sparkles in check is simple when you store them in salt and pepper shakers. Between projects, Holden stashes the jars in an aluminum spice rack pulled from an old cabinet. Vintage shaving brushes serve as miniature brooms come cleanup time.
Meet the worlds most inspiring ribbon display. To sidestep kinks and tangles, Holden screwed cup hooks along a yardstick (the tick marks ensure equal spacing). Then she hung wooden curtain rings on the hooks before adding the ribbon. The Roy G. Biv cache helps me keep track of my stock, she says.

Plants That Pay OffThese easy-care varieties are the
hard-working wonders landscape
designers rely on, year after year.
What makes a plant a good buy? Its not purchase price alone. Value is best
measured by how a plant performs once its in the ground. A bargain doesnt
need lots of attention, isnt prone to disease or insect problems, and spreads
on its own, says Lexington, Kentuckybased landscape designer Jon Carloftis.
And while theres no question that annuals deliver the most bang for the buck
in a single season, perennials, shrubs, and trees provide long-lasting structure

50 .countryliving.com . April 2014
For nearly a century, bluegrass musiciansand their fans have flocked to North Carolinas Old
Time Fiddlers & Bluegrass Festival,
a three-day to-do that takes place
at a campground in the foothills
of the Brushy Mountains in Union
Grove, about an hour north of
Charlotte. But last year, the storied
jamboree almost lost the chance to
reach its centennial.
The hoedown started in 1924,
when principal H.P. Van Hoy hosted
a fiddling contest to benefit his rural
school. The event was such a success
that he invited folks backfor the
next 46 years. His son Harper took
the reins in 1970 and moved the
festival to its current site. Fiddlers
Groves reputation as the countrys
longest-running folk festival grew,
and while the organizers have never
courted marquee names, several have
dropped in, including Jerry Garcia
and Doc Watson.
Loyal attendees were stunned
in January 2013 when the Van Hoys
regretfully decided to pull the plug
because the family patriarch, Harper
Van Hoy, 91, had Alzheimers disease.
Lissy Rosemont (far right) took the stage with the band Blackgrass when she was eight months pregnant.
BeLow Jessica Duncan poses with her grandfather Harper Van Hoy, who hosted the festival from 1970 to 2013.
51
But thanks to an outpouring of
community support, the bands played
on. Musicians offered to perform for
free, while local residents volunteered
to help with concessions and parking.
The generosity was overwhelming,
says Jessica Duncan, H.P. Van Hoys
31-year-old great-granddaughter. She,
along with around a dozen third-
and fourth-generation Van Hoy cous-
ins, realized that they had to rally.
The festival has run for 90 years,
through wars and the Depression.
We certainly didnt want to break that
chain, Duncan says.
Last May, the event attracted 1,500
people and more than 100 entertain-
ers. Theres a spiritual connection
that binds the folks who come, says
Duncan. We think of everyone here
as our extended family.
Harper Van Hoy passed away in

Ask a Country VetWhen is it safe to bathe dogs outdoors?
What happens if a cat burns her whiskers? And does my pet duck need a place to swim?
Dr. rob Sharp of Hillsboro, Ohio, has answers.
Q Now that the weathers warming up, Id like to start giving my three dogs baths outside with the garden hose. What does the air temperature need to be? anything else I should keep in mind? L.K., Greenfield, Massachusetts
A Remember when your mom told you, Eat right, get enough sleep, and dont go out without your
hat? While pulling an all-nighter,
scarfing junk food, or going outside
uncovered may not make you sick,
it will cause stress, which impairs your
bodys ability to fight illness. Its the
same for all animals: A calf taken from
his mom and sent off to another
farm may come down with a serious
respiratory infection called shipping
feverbrought on by stress. Sheep
chased by coyotes may dieeven if
they werent attackedjust from the
stress of the encounter.
So if you take your gang outside to
hose em down, youll need to minimize
any potential sources of stress, includ-
ing temperature. Id say 65 degrees in
the spring is a pretty safe standard, but
a better measure is to make sure its
warm enough that youd be comfortable
taking a shower out there with them.
Put on your swimsuit and have a wet
time together. If youre at ease, they will
be, too. (Also be mindful of how hotor
cold!the water supplied to your hose
is.) Dry your dogs off as soon as youre
done, and there shouldnt be a problem. photograph by blickwinkel/alamy

Q My cat got a little too curious and singed her whiskers on the stove! Could the fact that theyre shorter endanger her healthand will they grow back?
S.R., Valley City, North Dakota
A Relaxyour cats curiosity will only result in a temporary inconvenience for her. Because the
primary function of whiskers is to act
as feelers, giving your feline a sense
of space and shape, she now has an
altered appreciation of her surround-
ings. Her shortened whiskers will
make her think that an area is larger
than it really is, but unless shes a
chronic narrow-space squeezer, this
isnt a big deal (and even if she is,
shell learn to adjust).
Whiskers are a specialized form
of skin derivative, like nails and
eyelashes, with a natural cycle of
regrowth. However, since whiskers
play a key role in helping your kitty
judge her environment, it goes without
saying that they should never be
trimmed, no matter if theyre curly,
short, or burned. Even though your
pets are singed, theyll eventually be
replaced by new ones, a process that
usually takes two to three months. In
the meantime, dont worry: They, and
she, will be just fine.
Q Do I need to live near a pond or lake to be able to care for a pet duck properly? K.D., Aiken, South Carolina
A Not at all. Theres no need for you to own a pond for your duckjust as theres no need for dog owners to have farms for their pets to run. Wild ducks capture what they eat in ponds and use that water to help swallow their
food, wash off their bills, and generally keep from choking. And, of course, they
drink it. If you provide food and a sizable water dish, monitored daily, or even a
bucket of fresh water your duck can use to rinse off his bill, a pond isnt necessary.
These animals do love to swim, and a plastic wading pool can be a fun addition
to your ducks environment (like all birds, they have claws, so opt for a hard
and sturdy model versus an inflatable one). Make sure the water is kept clean,
and your pet will feel right at home. Remember, though, that most ducks mate
in the water, and if you want fertilized eggs, youll need to supply more than a
kiddie poolin that case, its best to consult an experienced breeder for advice.
But assuming your local laws permit ducks as pets, they can live quite happily
with little more than a backyard.
Veterinarian Rob ShaRp, author of No DogS iN heaveN? (Running Press), would love to
answer your pet questions. Drop him a line at countryliving@hearst.com.

When she was 6 years old, Jann Blazona approached her mother with a packet of zinnia seeds
and a request: Could she grow them in her familys
California backyard? Permission granted, Blazona
ripped up some ivy and threw in the seeds, she
recalls. And they grew! It was magical.
Decades later, with a handful of horticulture
classes under her belt, the interior designer has
traded that tiny zinnia patch for a one-and-a-half-
acre garden outside the home she and her husband,
Joe Capone, built nearly 10 years ago in Glen
Ellen, California. She tends to viburnums, dahlias,
hydrangeas, and 35 varieties of roses. To say
