Happy New Year!
As you plan your resolutions for 2018, think of goals you want to achieve and new
things to improve your health. We always can learn new things! Perhaps one of
your goals for this New Year is to invite neighbors, family, or friends to attend
your fce club. Reach out to old members of the Cross Roads fce and Hendersonville
fce clubs to meet with you. These have disbanded. Also the Friendly Mailbox club
members could be included. WE need new members to encourage us!
January is National Bean Month, National Pie Day, National Blonde Brownie
Month, and National Radon Month. I like to think of January as Soup Month. Try
the two recipes included in this newsletter.
Patricia will be mailing out the fce non-discrimination letters to all Club Presidents.
Return these back to office by January 31st. Also let her know which of your club
officers will be attending the Central Region Officer and Leader Lesson trainings on
Friday, February 12th from 9:30 am -12:00 pm9. We must register those attending
but encourage anyone to attend who has interest.
Then all are welcome to attend the Sumner County Council Meeting on January 29th
at 10:30 in the Demo Kitchen at the Extension Office,

This day celebrates the bean in all sizes, shapes and colors. Beans (legumes) are one of the longest cultivated plants dating back to the early seventh millennium BC.
Today, just as throughout the Old and New World history, beans are an important source of protein. A very healthy choice for any meal or snack, they are also an excellent source of fiber, are low in fat and are high in complex carbohydrates, folate and iron.
Significant amounts of fiber and soluble fiber are found in beans as one cup of cooked beans provide between 9 and 13 grams of fiber. Soluble fiber can help in lowering blood cholesterol.
• There are approximately 40,000 bean varieties in the world.
• Only a fraction of these varieties are mass-produced for regular consumption.
Green, red, kidney, lima, or soy are just a few of the different kinds of beans recognized on National Bean Day on January 6.

“The Hamilton Affair” By Elizabeth Cobbs
Annual Soup and Book Discussion Set against the dramatic backdrop of the American Revolution, and featuring a cast of legendary characters, The Hamilton Affair tells the sweeping, tumultuous, true story of Alexander Hamilton and Elizabeth Schuyler, from passionate and tender beginnings of their romance to his fateful duel on the banks of the Hudson River. Hamilton was a bastard and orphan, raised in the Caribbean and desperate for legitimacy, who became one of the American Revolution's most dashing--and improbable--heroes. Admired by George Washington, scorned by Thomas Jefferson, Hamilton was a lightning rod: the most controversial leader of the new nation. Elizabeth was the wealthy, beautiful, adventurous daughter of the respectable Schuyler clan--and a pioneering advocate for women. Together, the unlikely couple braved the dangers of war, the perils of seduction, the anguish of infidelity, and the scourge of partisanship that menaced their family and the country itself. Our book club is open to everyone and meets every other first Wednesday of each month. For more information, you may call UT Extension office at (615) 452-1423 - Theresa Allan or e-mail her at tallan@utk.edu.
January is National Radon Action Month and a perfect time to test your home for radon, the leading cause of lung cancer death for non-smokers. If elevated radon levels are found, the Department of Environment and Conservation encourages homeowners to install a mitigation system that removes the gas from around the home’s foundation.
The EPA estimates that approximately 70 percent of Tennessee’s population lives in high risk or moderate risk radon areas. According to the EPA, radon is the number one cause of lung cancer among non-smokers and is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States.
Come by the Extension Office to get a publication about RADON or if you need to test your home, we sell short term tests at the EXTENSION office for $9.00 or you can request a free one from the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation-https://tdec.tn.gov/Radon_Online/frmRADON_Online.aspx

Five-Bean Soup Recipe photo by Taste of Home One of my family's favorite soups, this tasty recipe was one I discovered years ago. Served with a salad and bread or rolls, it makes a savory supper. Sometimes we like to grate mozzarella cheese over the individual bowls just before serving. —Lynne Dodd,
MAKES:
14 servings TOTAL TIME:
Prep: 10 min. + standing Cook: 1 hour 35 min.
Ingredients:
• 5 packages (16 ounces each) dried beans: lima, great northern, kidney, pinto and split peas (enough for four batches of soup) • 3 beef bouillon cubes • 3 tablespoons dried chives • 1 teaspoon dried savory • 1 teaspoon salt, optional • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin • 1/2 teaspoon pepper • 1 bay leaf • 2-1/2 quarts water • 1 can (14-1/2 ounces) stewed tomatoes
Directions:
Combine beans; divide into four even batches, about 3-3/4 cups each. To make one batch of soup: Wash one batch of beans. Place in a large kettle; add enough water to cover. Bring to a boil; cook for 3-4 minutes. Remove from heat; cover and let stand 1 hour. Tie spices in a cheesecloth bag. Drain and rinse beans. Return to kettle; add bouillon, spices and water. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer 1-1/2 hours or until beans are tender, stirring occasionally. Remove spices. Add tomatoes and heat through. Yield: 14 servings (3-1/2 quarts).
