fundamental for an understand of this fascinating city, complete with a visit to the caves on the island of Elephanta.

Marina Drive
Chowpatty Beach

Dhobi Ghat

What we will do
We leave the port by coach and head to the Gateway of India where we board a motor boat for Elephanta island.
When we reach the island, we take a 5 minute train ride or, if the train is not running, a 20 minute walk to a point below the
caves from where 120 steps lead us to the entrance of the caves.
The caves, which date back to the 8thcentury AD, contain incredible sculptures depicting scenes from Indian mythology. Our
guide illustrates the hidden story behind every sculpture, the most impressive of which is without doubt the one depicting the
trilogy of Brahma (The Creator), Vishnu (The Preserver) and Shiva (The Destroyer).
At the end of the visit our boat takes us back to the Gateway of India, where we proceed to the restaurant.
After lunch, we set off to explore Mumbai's most important sites. Walking through the city, we'll see the Prince of Wales
Museum with its enormous dome which is said to have been inspired by the Gol Gumbaz in Bijapur, and the Jehangir Art
Gallery. We then pass by the University of Mumbai and the Supreme Court Building and head for the Rajabai Clock Tower,
designed by a British architect and modelled on Big Ben in London. A short distance from Chowpatty beach we stop to admire

lights look like a pearl necklace. Our visit proceeds past the Jain Temple and the Hanging Gardens up to Dhobi Ghat: an
enormous open-air washhouse where there is an incessant flurry of washing by hand, a custom that is still popular among
locals despite the advent of modern washing machines. We stop briefly in this area to take photos, a perfect opportunity to
take a picture of the Parsi Towers of Silence, a sacred place for the Parsi community and therefore inaccessible to other
people.
The next stop is the Mani Bhavan museum, once the residence of the "Father of the Nation" Mahatma Ghandi who lived in
Mumbai from 1917 to 1934.
Finally, before returning to the port, we pass Chatrapati Shivaji, the old railway station and the city's most imposing Gothic
building, and the Asiatic Society Library.
The itinerary may be subject to change.
There is only one train to the Elephanta caves; in the unlikely event that it is not running we have to walk for 20-25 minutes
before we can climb the 120 steps to the entrance to the caves. The same applies on the way back. Comfortable shoes with
rubber soles are therefore recommended.
Places on this excursion are limited. We recommend booking early to avoid disappointment.
You need to be physically fit to take part in this excursion.
This excursion is not recommended for guests with mobility problems.

What we will do
We leave the port by coach and head towards the Gateway of India where we board the ferry that takes us to the cave

In the caves we can admire the temples carved out of the rock that date back to the 8th century AD. The bas-relief statues
that are sculpted in the stone are brought to life as the guides recount the Indian myths and legends that animate them. The

to observe the various local fishing techniques including veesuvala and padal.
After leaving the boat we head for the village, where we are divided into small groups to watch the locals going about their
day to day business: catching crabs and fish, preparing coconut milk punch, processing shellfish and coconut fibres, weaving
rugs and oola madayal (special coconut leaves woven to create a roof covering), and making fishing nets.
For lunch we enjoy local specialities in an open-air area with a view of the Chinese fishing nets resting on the surface of the
water. We can see the way these nets are used and how the fishing system known as papu mari works.
Such an exciting day would not be complete without a Kolkali performance, a traditional dance in which the dancers move in a
circle, singing and dancing and tapping each other with sticks.
And that is not all: after the performance we enjoy a brief rickshaw ride through the narrow streets of the village
Our trip has come to an end and we return to Kochi, travelling through spectacular countryside with backwaters and fish
farms on either side of the road.

From Kochi we take the coach towards Alappuzha, previously known as Alleppey, making a brief stop on the way.
We arrive in Alappuzha, situated in a dense network of leafy tropical canals, and board the boat for an idyllic journey along the
so-called backwaters, rivers, lakes and canals that connect the coast to the southern interior part of Kochi. For centuries these
canals have been a secure, efficient mode of transport for goods and people moving from the interior to the coastal towns.
We enjoy a delicious welcome drink and, in the comfort of our boat, we will sail along the glistening canals with abundant
tropical vegetation, admiring the majestic forests, lagoons and the outskirts of the city dotted with palm trees.
We also see the village residents bathing and washing their clothes, and the livestock on the riverbank.
Having feasted our eyes on so much beauty, we will now also indulge our palates with a typical lunch served on board, before
returning to the ship by coach.
The coach transfer from Kochi to Alappuzha will take around an hour and a half.
The cruise will last approximately 4 hours.
The excursion duration may vary depending on traffic conditions.

The lunch consists of typical Indian dishes with spices.
A welcome drink (mango juice) and water with the meal are included in the cruise.

Upon arrival at the island, we are welcomed to the resort with a non-alcoholic cocktail, an excellent opportunity for a toast to
our brief but unforgettable stay on the island, the wonders of which we can explore in a few hours.
During our visit we can enjoy the beach around the resort or relax in the shade of the trees by the pool. Surrounded by
tropical nature, the turquoise waters of the lagoon and the blue waters of the ocean, Chaaya Island Dhonveli Resort enjoys a
