I am pleased to introduce Cornell University’s new visualidentity program. At the heart of this new program, thenew logo draws on the power of history to distinguishall future university communications and products asclearly recognizable materials of Cornell University. Thetimelessness of the emblem of Cornell University and ourcollective appreciation for tradition are the values thisnew visual identity program seeks to project consistently, not only at high moments but also in the course ofeveryday business.
To this end, the Cornell University visual identityprogram envisions the use of the full-color Cornellemblem with the highest production values possibleon those occasions that require a formal representationof the university, such as in ceremonial applicationsincluding the university flag, presidential podiums, andcommencement regalia. In all other applications, Cornell’snew logo will be used. It includes two parts: the insignia, which is a modern and efficient version of the emblem,
and the accompanying “Cornell University” logotype. This style guide has been developed to assist theindividual units of the university in using the Cornelllogo in their communications materials in print, web, television broadcast, and electronic presentation media.(There also are style guidelines for merchandisingapplications.) This guide contains strict standardsdesigned to reflect a clear and consistent image of theuniversity, but it also recognizes the diversity andpluralism that are unique to Cornell, allowing individualcomponents of the university to adopt different, moreindividualized looks when they are communicating withtheir own internal audiences.
All new communications and products related toCornell University should now prominently display theCornell logo. All previously existing Cornell Universitycommunications and products may continue to be usedfor a short term. After a transition period of one year, allunits of the university will be expected to use the newCornell logo in all of their communications.
On behalf of the entire team who worked hard to capturetheir advice and wisdom, I wish to express gratitude tothe university’s leadership, faculty, and staff as well asthe student body and their Image Committee for theirsupport. Thank you for joining us in the acceptance ofthe Cornell logo and the implementation of the followingstyle guidelines. My staff will be available to respond toquestions and address issues as we move forward.

Basic guidelines for use of the Cornell logo
The Cornell logo includes two parts: the round insigniaand the accompanying “Cornell University” logotype.
The “Cornell University” logotype is never to be usedwithout the round insignia. (In the logotype, the word“Cornell” is always used with the word “University.”)
The Cornell logo must be used on all university stationeryitems: letterhead, envelopes, business cards, etc. TheCornell logo may never be used so small that its insigniais less than 7/8" in diameter. The logo may be scaled upto any size.
The style guide describes how names o units o theuniversity (schools and colleges, divisions, departments, oices, institutions, centers, programs) are to appearin combination with the Cornell logo. (These namecombinations are called signatures.)
In other (non-stationery) print applications, the insigniamay be used alone (without the logotype) but only i it is1" or larger in size.
The Cornell logo or stand alone insignia should appearon the cover o all printed materials published by theuniversity and its units. (In holiday greeting cards andinvitations, the Cornell logo may appear on the backcover or an inside panel—these are the only exceptions.)
Those units o the university that have existing graphic
identiiers may use such marks only on inside pages orthe back cover o printed materials. (However, i the backcover serves as a sel-mailer and measures less than 3-3/", only the Cornell logo or Cornell signature shouldappear.) Secondary logos are not to be used on the rontcover o university publications or on the same page asthe Cornell logo. (In the case o event posters—whichhave only one side—existing secondary logos may beused i deemed necessary but only in the lower third othe page. The Cornell logo should appear prominently inthe upper two-thirds o the page.)
Logos o non-Cornell partner institutions, or example
unding or research partners, may be included on coverswith the Cornell logo, as long as the saety area ismaintained.
For screen applications—web, television broadcast, andelectronic presentations such as PowerPoint—there is anadapted version o the Cornell logo that accommodatesthe technical needs o those media. (The stand-alone
CU Logo
LogotypeInsignia
insignia is not to be used in screen applications.) Thescreen version o the logo is never to be used in print
applications.
There are licensing regulations and technically adaptedversions o the Cornell logo (and insignia) or apparel useand other merchandising applications.
Please do not attempt to create art or the logo, insignia,or logotype or either print or screen applications.Download the art rom the Cornell University web site:www.cornelllogo.cornell.edu. I you don’t ind thesignature with the words you need, please contact CornellUniversity Oice o Publications and Marketing.

The signatures show how the insignia is used in conjunction withone-,two-, and three-line names.
The insignia and “Cornell University” logotype must always be thesame color. The college or department name can be either white orCornell Red, depending on the background.
It cannot be emphasized too strongly that the word “University”shouldollow “Cornell” under all circumstances. Shown on these pages are
examples o the university signatures in two lines as well as sug-gestedline breaks or three-line signatures.
Three-line breaks are shown as they allow or maximum letter sizeandminimum line length (width). Two lines are or use when space per-mits keeping the ull designated name without breaks.

The updated insignia incorporates the elements o the university’soriginal emblem. Eliminating ine lines and drop shadows and sim-pliying the shield and crests eases reproduction and enhances leg-ibility in reduced sizes.
The saety area around the insignia makes the insignia stand apartrom other visual elements such as text, headlines, photographs, orillustrations.
The insignia may be used without the logotype in (at a minimumsize o 1" in diameter) but only when the lettering in the insigniacan be read easily.

Cornell University stationery
All stationery items—business cards, letterhead, envelopes, mailing labels—use the Cornell logo. No logos/ graphics (logos other than the Cornell logo) may appear onstationery items.
You may order stationery items from university-approvedprinting vendors: www.purchasing.cornell.edu/Printing.cfm.For desktop reproduction, templates are available for a vari-ety of stationery items. It is recommended that you use thetemplates rather than attempt to recreate your own statio-nery items.
Letterhead
There are two basic styles for Cornell University letterhead, each with three options to accommodate varying levels ofdetail. No text or graphics may be placed in the safety areasor clear space in the letterhead layout.
A. Letterhead with name of primary unit shown in a
signature with the Cornell logo
1. When only the primary unit of the university needsto be identified, use the nonpersonalized version of theletterhead shown in example A-1. Note that the nameof the primary unit is shown in a signature with theCornell logo and the address information is shown inthe upper right corner.
2. When the primary and secondary (and tertiary, etc.)units of the university need to be identified but noindividual needs to be named, use the nonpersonal-ized version of the letterhead shown in example A-2.In the upper right corner, the name of the secondaryunit is shown in bold type, followed by the name of thetertiary unit, if any (not in bold), and then the addressinformation.
3. When an individual needs to be named, use the per-sonalized version of the letterhead shown in exampleA-3. In the upper right corner, the name of the individ-ual is shown in bold type, followed by his/her title (notin bold), the name of the secondary and tertiary, etc.unit(s) (not in bold), and then the address information.
B. Letterhead with name of primary unit shown sepa-rately from the Cornell logo
1. When only the primary unit of the university needsto be identified, use the nonpersonalized version of the
letterhead shown in example B-1. Note that the nameof the primary unit is shown separately from the Cornelllogo in the upper right corner, followed by the addressinformation (in a smaller type size).
2. When the primary and secondary (and tertiary, etc.)units of the university need to be identified but noindividual needs to be named, use the nonpersonal-ized version of the letterhead shown in example B-2. Inthe upper right corner, the name of the primary unit is
shown, followed by the name of the secondary unit inbold type, the tertiary unit, if any (not in bold), and thenthe address information.
3. When an individual needs to be named, use the per-sonalized version of the letterhead shown in exampleB-3. In the upper right corner, the name of the primary
unit is followed by the name of the individual in boldtype, his/her title (not in bold), the name of the second-ary and tertiary, etc. unit(s) (not in bold), and then theaddress information.
Envelopes
There are two basic styles for Cornell University businessenvelopes (no. 10 envelopes). The examples show layoutsthat meet U.S. Postal Service requirements for mailing. Notext or graphics may be placed in the safety areas or clearspace in the envelope layout.
Envelopes coordinate with letterhead styles, except that theyare not personalized.
A. Envelope with name of primary unit shown in a sig-nature with the Cornell logo
1. When only the primary unit of the university needsto be identified in the return address, use the ver-sion of the envelope shown in example A-1. Note thatthe name of the primary unit is shown in a signaturewith the Cornell logo in the upper left corner and theaddress information (room, building, city, state, zip) isshown in a single line just below the signature.
2. When a secondary (and tertiary, etc.) unit also needsto be identified in the return address, use the version ofthe envelope shown in example A-2. In the lower leftcorner, the name of the secondary unit is shown in bold
type, followed by the name of the tertiary unit, if any(also in bold); the address information (room, building, city, state, zip) is shown in a single line just below thesignature in the upper left corner.
B. Envelope with unit name(s) shown separately fromthe Cornell logo
When the amount of detail that needs to be included in thereturn address is so great that the version of the envelopeshown in example A will not accommodate the information, use a version of the envelope shown in example B.
Note that in each of the three options of example B, thecomplete text block of the return address (starting with the
line “Cornell University” and ending with the line of city, state, zip) must be centered vertically with the top and bot-tom edges of the Cornell insignia, however many lines oftext comprise the return address.
1. When the primary and secondary (and tertiary, etc.)units of the university need to be identified, use theversion of the envelope shown in example B-1. Notethat “Cornell University” is the first line in the returnaddress, followed by the name of the primary unit (inthe same type size as the university name). Next is a

separate block of text that includes the name of thesecondary unit (in bold type but a smaller type size), thename of the tertiary unit, if any (not in bold), and theaddress information (room, building on one line, fol-lowed by city, state, zip on another line).
2. When the primary and secondary (and tertiary, etc.)
units of the university need to be identified but pre-sented with less emphasis than in example B-1, use theversion of the envelope shown in example B-2. Notethat “Cornell University” is the first line in the returnaddress. Next is a separate block of text that includesthe name of the primary (or secondary) unit (in boldtype but a smaller type size), the name of the secondary(or tertiary) unit, if any (not in bold), and the addressinformation (room, building on one line, followed bycity, state, zip on another line).
3. When no names of primary, secondary, or tertiaryunits need to be identified in the return address, usethe version of the envelope shown in example B-3.
Note that “Cornell University” is the first line in thereturn address, followed by a separate block of text thatincludes the address information (room, building on oneline, followed by city, state, zip on another line).
Mailing labels coordinate with letterhead and enve-lope styles; they are not personalized.
Business cards
There are three basic styles for Cornell University businesscards. No text or graphics may be placed in the safety areasor clear space in the business card layout.
A. Business card with the names of the university and
primary unit emphasizedWhen the primary unit needs to be identified withemphasis equal to that of the name of the university, use a version of the business card shown in example A.Note that the name of the primary unit, if included, isshown in the same size as the name of the university.
The layout also provides maximum clear space aroundthe Cornell insignia, thereby emphasizing its signifi-cance.
In a text block above the name of the university and pri-mary unit, the individual’s name is shown in bold type, followed by the individual’s title (not in bold). Below the
name of the university and primary unit, a separate textblock (in the same type size as the individual’s name andtitle, not in bold) includes the name of the secondary(and tertiary, etc.) unit, address, and contact informa-tion.
The information that is included must be succinct (13total lines, maximum); if it is longer than this you mustprint the additional information on the back of the card.
Note that the first text block of information (individual’sname and title) is top-aligned to the top margin of the
business card and the second text block of information(all of the information below the name of the universityand primary unit) is base-aligned to the bottom marginof the business card. (The exact space above and belowthe name of the university and primary unit varies, depending on the total number of lines of informationin the second text block.)
When the amount of detail that needs to be includedin the business card is so great that the versions ofthe business card shown in example A will not accom-modate the information, use one of the versions ofthe business card shown in example B or example C.Because each of these layouts uses minimum clear spacearound the Cornell insignia, the text block is wider andcan accommodate the inclusion of more detailed infor-mation than the versions of the business card shown inexample A.
B. Business card with wide text blocks to accommo-date greatest amount of detail
When the primary and secondary (and tertiary, etc.)units of the university need to be identified but present-ed with less emphasis than in example A, use the ver-sion of the business card shown in example B. Note thatthe name of the primary unit is shown in bold type butin a smaller type size than the name of the university.
In a text block above the name of the university, theindividual’s name is shown in bold type, followed by theindividual’s title, shown in italic type. Below the nameof the university, a separate text block (in the same typesize as the individual’s name and title) includes the nameof the primary (secondary, tertiary, etc.) unit (in boldtype), address, and contact information.
Note that the complete text block of information (start-ing with the individual’s name and ending with the lastline of contact information) must be centered vertically(between the top and bottom of the card) on the busi-ness card, however many lines of text are included.
C. Business card with wide text blocks and emphasison name of primary unit
When the primary unit needs to be identified withemphasis equal to that of the name of the university, use a version of the business card shown in example C.Note that the name of the primary unit is shown in thesame type size as the name of the university.
Note that the complete text block of information (start-ing with the individual’s name and ending with the lastline of contact information) must be centered verticallyon the business card, however many lines of text areincluded.
Business cards should not be reproduced usingthermography.
